I use both. Unless you have an octagon softbox however it's often nice with an umbrella to create a round'ish catch light in the model's eyes. The square catchlight from a rectangular softbox is IMO not as flattering.
If you use an umbrella as the main light I would not use it as a reflector though but rather turn it 180 degrees and use it as a diffuser (white umbrella) to soften the light. But this is just a personal preference. |

A Beauty Dish works well for the round catch lights. Umbrellas work well too but in certain cases they will also include lines in the reflection from the frame of the umbrella. Depending on if that matters or not is up to you and your subject. I have only shot a handfull of portraits for some friends and family, I usually set up a large rectangular softbox to either side of subject beauty dish in front opposite side of large softbox, back light with a splash pan reflector and sometimes I will use a hair light overhead but typically the 3 light set up provides nice enough results. |

Shoot thru Umbrella = Beautiful soft light, light spread/spill
Softbox = Beautiful soft light, less spread/more control/more falloff

One thing about an umbrella is that if you are in a smallish room it's very hard to control the light. The spill from the sides then reflect off of walls and ceiling. This is where a soft box comes in handy. Now if your umbrellas have the black backing to control the light it is no different than a softbox but round. |

Here is an interesting article comparing softbox vs. umbrella lighting patterns.
