I need a longer lense on my D80 for sports photography that I intend on doing.

Budget is small and so I've narrowed my options down to a 70-300 or a 28-300.

I like the idea of the 28-300 as it could almost be a permanent fixture on the camera and I could probably sell my 24-120mm to offset the cost or buy a wide angle lense to give me a good spectrum in as few lenses as possible.

But does the extra zoom come at the expense of quality throughout the zoom range compared to the 70-300?

Any opinions on which is better?

The sigma 70-300 apo dg... is a great lens for about $200. Very sharp (especially up to 200mm). Only negative is focus is slow and can hunt in low light. Takes pretty good macros too!

A 28-300 will be more handy, but image quality won't be as good.
