Actually I was wonderin' if dodging and burning could help this shot as I don't have a clue on how they work...
Edited to add: Maybe I should say that the effect I'm looking for is window shopping a cool lamp shop at night.

Dodging and burning, lightens or darkens certain spots on a photograph.
Depending on what you want, it may or may not look better. |

Bumping to see if I can get someone to try some dodging and burning on the shot for educational reasons... |

I take it the neon sign was off?
Kinda hard to say what can be done without seeing the original?
If you want you can email me the original and I can take a look at it.
Send me a PM and I will send you my email address for large files.

TooCool, here's a (very) quick mod using just burning to darken the area below the windows, and also the ceiling area above the lamps.
Puts the focus on the windows, and reduces the distraction of the ceiling tiles.
I don't see any areas where dodging (selective lightening) would be exceptionally beneficial, with the exception of some very small areas.

Thanks Kirbic, That does bring out the window more, but I think it's just a touch too dark below. How did you 'burn' the bottom? What settings were you using? |

Looking again, I agree I was a little heavy handed at the bottom.
I copied into Photoshop, enlarged the window to get a large space around the image, then used a 200px brush with hardness set ot 0% and exposure set to 10%. Made several passes, of course.

I am glad you asked about dodging and burning I too have been trying to work with them lately and find it very hard to get the 'color matches' correct, if any one knows of or can write a tutorial on these effects I am sure many of us would benefit. |
