Some #$* stole my camera, and now i´m in the decision of buying another camera, according to my budget, the finalist are nikon 5700 and sony 717, maybe the canon g5. I love photograph (i'm still a bad photographer as you could see in my profile) and shot anything a see, since macro shots to landscapes, i have done an in-depth review of all the cameras, but i´m still stuck in the desicion.
Any help, anyone, please?

Firstly, sorry to hear about your camera. How was it stolen? Little buggers thieves are..
I have only ever used one of them and that was the Nikon 5700, to me it felt odd and too small in my hands - so that was a no no - it's also a bit temperamental in low light (so I have read - but then aren't all compact digitals?)
From what I have read and seen about the Sony it seems pretty good, a lot of people on here seem to have it and rave about it. Take a peek at some of the images they produce with it, quite impressive. To me though it's the most ugly thing I have ever seen.
The Canon, well that's what my instinct will tell me is the best one of the lot. I have heard many people rave about this also - I am sure if Gordon reads this he will tell you how good the G2 is -again have a look at some images taken with it.
Good luck.

Those are both good cameras. Of the two I'd say go with the Nikon. But before you make the plunge consider the Olympus C-5060 WZ, which got a very high mark for image quality at megapixel.net, less zoom power but also less expensive;
and take a look at the Minolta DiMAGE A1, same price as the Nikon with slightly less zoom but has the AntiShake the Nikon lacks.
Even if your end up ordering online or by mail it's always a good idea to go to a camera store and hold them in your hands to see how they feel.

When I was looking, I looked at the G5, the Nikon 5400, Nikon 5700, Oly 5050 and the Sony 717. I really couldn't make a decision until I went to the store and tried them. I took some memory cards and took shots on each one, then took them hom to compare. I liked the G5 the best, not only from an image quality standpoint, but also from usability and ergonomics perspectives. The greatest features in the world are useless if you miss the shot while fumbling through a menu. My dad has a Canon S50, which has the same CCD as the G5, but in a more compact size. It is a very nice camera too.

ramevi...
If you want an F717 that's hardly been used, plus a leather case, 256mb memory stick and an extra battery, I've got one for sale at a very reasonable price. Drop me an email...

Terribly sorry to hear about your camera... I would be lost if that happened to me.
Just a thought - with the new Nikon 8700 8 megapixel camera coming out next month (I just got mine on order today - hooray!) I would bet dollars to donuts that the price on the 5700 is going to plummet as soon as that hits the market, if you can hold out.

I'm glad I read this. I'm contemplating the 5700. Now I think I'll wait a month. ;)
Thanks!

I had exactly the same dilemma as yourselves and had the 828/5700 and Minolta A1 as my top 3.
I plumped for the A1 as I'd seen negative reviews on the 5700 (lowlight focussing, battery life) and 828 (noise) The camera is really A1 and I'm busilly learning how to use it, 3 days and the battery light hasn't come on yet.
I'm not sure how it works in Mexico but my local camera shop did me a price match on an internet site (saved me another £140).
ramevi, just seen a few of your pics with the olympus - excellent :)

WHOA, I know someone who had the 5700 and was very unhappy with it. He said that it was virually useless in low light, AF doesnt work, and MF isnt that good. He wants to sell it, and get my camera, or the rebel. Im not trying to represnt all the people that have a 5700 and are happy with them, Im just trying to warn you.

I 'played' with the 5700 in the shop and really loved the camera, the macro was the best I'd tested and almost convinced me to buy, it was only reading about the low light/battery problems that swayed me to the A1. I don't doubt there will be many challenge winners taken with the 5700, it is afterall an awesome camera.

I still use my 5700 (despite also owning the 300d) and am very happy with it. The low light focus is nowhere near as good as the 300d, but it's far from useless. The AF is extremely accurate in decent light. MF sucks on all non-slrs as far as I can tell, since you're using a tiny little LCD screen to guage it.
Biggest pluses to the 5700 are the 8x optical zoom, the range of manual features, the size (pretty compact), the ability to capture .raw images, fairly low ccd noise, and the customizable pre-sets. All of which i believe are comparable in the Sony.
the only negative i can see to the sony is the memory stick. I like that CF cards are usable with a variety of other manufacturers and products, where sticks are only compatible with other sony products (as far as i know, anyway) |

Very much depends on what you wanna do with it later... Check out the specs on dpreview.com.
If you like night photography (and infrared), go with the Sony. If you like landscape style stuff, go for the nikon 8x zoom

Wow, thank you all for your advises, i'm still working on it, i think is gonna take a few more days, here in Mx is hard to get a good camera at a fair price because of the taxes.... with my budget i could get a 300d in USA.
I really have fun and knowledge with you all people.
