LOL
I actually checked what was on there - nothing worthy of blackmail. HA HA HA I had saved all of the retrieved files from my original scan so I didn't feel too weird sending it off. If he finds something juicy, it'll be a surprise to me.
(off to the store, buying more cases of beer for SC) |

I'll be sure to do a super-deep-level-mega-encryption-nsa-ssl-NCIS-CSI-decode on the card and pull all the images she's ever made with it.
I'll find SUMTHIN' to blackmail her with!
Then I'll use my super-cool-Abby-from-NCIS-showed-me-image-enhancement-trick and pull her reflection off some reflective surface... You know, like a wooden post or something... to prove she was there taking the picture.
Just wait -- I'm ramping up my entire super-cluster of machines here in the lab to process this card.
I'll make Grissom, Jethro, AND Horatio proud! ;)

Nothing in the mail yet. It will probably take a couple more days -- I'm in the boonies out here in the desert. Might not make it to my door until Monday. |

I hope you will take a video of the arrival of the package, the unpacking, isertion in the card reader....etc etc, all with the appropriate background music, then post it here right away. The suspense is building exponentially. In fact, maybe you should install a webcam in your door for all of us to monitor deliveries 24-7. |

To be honest I do not think that anything will be recoverable. When Judy viewed the file it doesn't write a new file then delete the old, it just changes a few bits within the file actually on the card. I know they say cards try to rotate the areas they write, but this was just changing a few bits in the file - I daresay Windows is in full control of the filesystem and any subsequent changes and how they are applied on the card.
Sorry to sound so negative but I think the image will end up being DQ`d :(
Fingers crossed though. |

Just remember that that story involves running naked down the street ... ;-)
Interesting bit about the very first web-cam from an article in The Guardian on the history of the Internet:
Originally posted by Cited Article: The first webcam began operating in 1991, the same year as Tim Berners-Lee's World Wide Web, and had its origins in an even more important topic in computer science: the flow of caffeine around a research group. The group, based in Cambridge University's computer lab and led by Dr Quentin Stafford-Fraser, had a problem: the coffee machine was shared by others in more distant parts of the building.
"These poor souls would often arrive, mug in hand, to find no fresh coffee," explains Stafford-Fraser. "So one afternoon, friends and I gripped an old camera in a retort stand and connected it to a spare computer, then wrote a program [known as XCoffee] that allowed anyone in our group to display a live image of the pot in the corner of their screen.
"When, in 1993, web browsers were first able to display images, my colleague Dan Gordon modified the software so that a browser could take the place of our program. As a side effect, the whole world could see the image. Millions did, and so the first webcam was born."
Coffeecam finally shut down in 2001, when the computer science department moved to a new building. |

That's the way I see it, too. Still holding out hope though.
I will say that while this really sucks for Judy and we're hoping for the best, it will also suck for ekmai who is currently in 4th place but will not get any front page exposure if it gets bumped to 3rd place when all is said and done.
It's really a lousy situation both. |

Yeah, I'm surprised that SC is letting it go on this long, I mean its nice that they are, but this will certainly get the DPConspiracy nuts in an uproar over favoritism. |

Well I think the fact that the process is so transparent, being played out here mitigates that. It just seems sensible and fair to me. I've had image that await validation for much longer than this, albeit for different reasons. |

Yeah, i'm not against it or anything, its an awesome image and I hope she can get it validated, and the fact that it is playing out in this thread is much better than behind the scenese. |

Unforuntately, we couldn't wait any longer. No one is happy about this situation, but it's important we impartially apply the rules as written ... :-( |

Hard call to make - but sadly the right one.
Fair play to SC for this and getting involved in the thread.

I'm sorry, I like the SC and I think they do a good job, but considering that it's taken them up to 2.5 weeks to validate a couple of photos, it seems like there should have been leeway on this side as well. Since there were people that were watching this thread, they could have told Judy that they didn't have time to wait for the card to be sent. To be silent on the time frame, watch the card being sent off, and then DQ'ing seems mean.
If the time frame had been told to Judy in private, then I apologize to the SC. If not... |

Far as I am concerned its the right decision - its not their fault Jutilda got caught cheating, and like other cheats before her, the DQ was quite rightly deserved.
Don't do the crime if you can't do the time..

The time frame is listed in the rules, and we've already gone well beyond that. It's only fair that the new ribbon winner gets some time on the home page, and if the file is recovered, it could be reinstated. Given that the image was apparently modified on the card though, it seems unlikely that a valid original will ever be found. |

sad but fair,
SC, thanks for the way you've handled this.... and for the suspense too
Judy, you haven't lost anything, you have won tons of friendship and true sympathy, I bet this episode will never be forgotten.
Charles, you better screw up the recovering of the original. It would be heartbreaking if the solution comes a bit too late.....(edit) no, wait, I just read Scalvert's post, it seems the decision could still be reversed, so you better find it. Keep us posted.

reactions to that response. shock, dismay, trying to come up with responses that won't get me censored by the SC. I guess there's just one less person I have to like and respect on the site. |

ok, that was actually pretty funny. But seriously, Simms, I expected better of you. But I've run across more than my fair share of jerks today, so I shouldn't be surprised.
