Living in Eugene I am surrounded by rabid Oregon Duck fans. I had the opportunity to go to the Oregon-WSU game a few weeks back and managed to capture a fairly unique combination of stadium/sky. On a lark I cold called the university and got the Director of Media Services' email. I sent the picture over and got back that "Coach Kelly loved it" and it's exactly what he's been wanting to use for recruiting. We talked about compensation and I threw out perhaps some field-passes to shoot a future game and some tix for the family to the Civil War game (Oregon vs. Oregon State). While they were working on it, I actually ran into the guy in charge of field passes by total coincidence. One of our nurses showed him my pic and he said, "hey, that's my screensaver!" We got to talking a bit and I just got an email back that says:
Jason
Just wanted to get back to you regarding shooting on gamedays. If you consider your niche to be “establishing shots” (i.e. the stadium and its surroundings) we are in need of just such photography.
Consider angles from high above on top of the pressbox as well as down on the field and anywhere in between. I would leave it all up to you and give you freedom to move around as you see fit.
Consider time lapse, etc..
In any case consider it done. I will get you credentials for all of the remaining games that will give you all-access. Lets talk the week of the USC game.
Regards,
Anyway, pretty exciting and totally out of the blue. I'm no sports photog and happened to be in the right place at the right time to capture a great shot. So if anybody is watching the Oregon-USC game on Halloween, look for me down on the field. I'll likely be wearing my signature felt brimmed hat.
I can't just post the shot here, but if you want to see it, send me a PM. :) |

I'd love to see it. If you see one of the K-9's walking around and searching the area, try to get a shot. They're probably with my agency and I don't get to see enough of them. :) |

It's always a thrill to catch a wave that snowballs into something this exciting. Your talent is getting out there. Congrats, and best of luck with wherever this leads from the start that you have going now.
ETA, Maybe you should think about keeping the 300mm, at least for a while.

Ya, I thought of that, except they are looking for for wide angle stuff and I'm not sure the 300mm will be fast enough anyway for night games. |

My boys and I will be at that game, as we were at the Wazzu blowout. Count us as rabid fans :-) My boys are even skipping trick or treating with friends at home. Fair warning - it is a black out game that night so along with your felt hat - wear all black :-) I think one of my son's is going to be balloon boy in the tailgate trick or treat section before the game LOL

Thanks for the tip. Will definitely try to get a snap. I'll probably be down on the field for the first half and then may move up to the press box for the second half. That's my current plan anyway. Hoping the rain holds off, although it never rains at Autzen stadium. |

A really cool photo with a nice angle of Phil Knight on the field (West endzone) during the 4th quarter would be nice too.
You are right it never rains in Autzen Stadium - it just drizzles, pours, mists, etc LOL
Did you know the last time USC came to Autzen the decibels were recorded at 127.9 so bring ear plugs - it is going to be CRAZY. My boys are already ready to hunt for you. |
