I keep getting them for my Deer Point Controversy image. I sent it within minutes of winning. Is it possibly computer generated?

"Keep getting them..."? How many is "them"?

I've gotten three. The last one said something about "straight out of the camera without automatic tilt" and mine was straight out of the camera.

lol. Maybe it's because they want the original for the Deer Point Conspiracy instead. ;-)

I can confirm that the last of those request emails was not computer generated, and that if you have any questions about it I advise you to raise a help ticket (via Help->Contact Us on the top menu).

Yes, I did that. Thanks, Manic. I worry that the way I originall viewed it may have accidentally turned it portrait if I shot in in landscape, but I didn't change anything. I usually open it the first time to view from the card and would it have saved it without my knowing it? YIKES. That would really piss me off cause I didn't do anything on purpose.

Well, sh@*!! I think I'm screwed. I open stuff up using Microsoft something or other, so I can see it big on the screen. If I turned it to see it upright then it automatically saved it. I do that all the time and never thought a thing of it. CRAP - I had no idea that was not the original because no data was changed. Oh well.. I'll look again, but that's pretty much the way it is.

So anytime you open an image and you want to see it rotated, it will save it and that's considered altering it? MAN, I'm so pissed at myself. I had absolutely no idea. How else am I supposed to look at stuff? Wouldn't photoshop do the same thing? Or would it ask me if I wanted to save and I'd say no. DAMN IT.

Oh man, do you still have the original on the card maybe?

Judy, are you looking at jpegs or the RAW files? Do you shoot in both? Have you run recovery software on your card (I'm assuming you've erased that already) to see if you might still have the file? Amazing how long they really stay there, you know. And I use Photoshop's Bridge software, which indeed rotates images so I can see 'em right side up, but as far as I know doesn't do anything to the file itself.

This is one of those things that perhaps requires revisiting. If the software only rotate a file, that should be clearly evident. Isn't it? I'm not seeing how that can alter anything else, but I'm not a software expert either.

When I am shooting for DPC, I transfer all my files into an "original" file without viewing them. Then I transfer a second set into a folder for editing. Maybe that'd work for you in the future? I hope you don't get DQ'd!

The problem is, when the software rotates the image it is producing a tag that says "I have been modified", and it's not possible to see whether that is the ONLY modification. In other words, someone might deliberately do such a rotation to mask OTHER modifications (like to the date), so even though this rotation thing is an insignificant modification it still has to be DQable.

That's what I think is the reasoning, anyway.... But what do I know?

According to the Microsoft site, this is what I found, but it won't let me do it, probably because I didn't do it originally. There is no option to "revert to original." This is insane. I never thought looking at something would do that. Grrrr. Still trying to see if I can recover the "original original." Thanks for the tips.

"If I make changes to a picture that I'm not satisfied with, how do I restore the picture back to its original state?

Whenever you edit a picture in Photo Gallery using the Fix pane, Photo Gallery automatically saves a copy of the original picture. To restore the picture to its original state, click the Undo menu in the Fix pane, and then click Revert to Original"

if you shot in jpeg, zero assumption recovery has worked very well for me -- heaven knows i used it a lot a couple of months ago (i insisted on shooting with what i knew, or thought, was a bad card)

Jesus, what a nightmare! Fingers crossed for you that things work out. Good luck, Judy.

Undo/Redo. This feature lets you experiment with the editing tools to discover how they work and what they do, so you can be creative and have fun because you can undo and redo whatever changes you make to a photo. If you go back to the gallery and later want to undo changes to the photo, just select the photo again, click Fix, and then click Revert.

Ok, I open the image, click FIX and there is no revert thing to click on. Grrr. Any suggestions?

Still working on it. I'm not going down without a fight.

People have repeatedly mentioned RECOVERY SOFTWARE for you card. I think you should do this.

I am running recovery software right now. Everybody cross your fingers. If this wasn't a FIRST and a BLUE at that, it wouldn't be a big deal, but IT'S A BIG DEAL! :~)

Thanks, Shanon. I'm trying cardrecovery as mentioned in PC Magazine as the one to use. If that doesn't work, I'll give the Lexmark one a try. This is maddening. I thought I was seasoned enough to know better, but I guess not. DUHHH :~P

Most people usually don't find out how the process works until they need to get validated. This information could be better conveyed to the masses.
