I got a new external hard drive a while back. My computer automatically assigned it to J:
Now, the icon is gone and when I click on J: it says please insert disk. I've tried switching USB ports and rebooting, and it isn't working...
Any ideas on troubleshooting this? |

Things to check/try:
1.) Is the power adapter supplying power to the drive?
2.) When you plug the power adapter into the drive, do you hear the drive spin up?
3.) If you plug in another USB device into one of the ports you are trying the drive in, does it work? If not, then of course it's the port
4.) Can you try the drive on another computer? |

If you use several flash drives/HDs, sometimes the drive letters get changed. Try manually changing the drive letter for that drive back to "J." Go to Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management --> Disk Management --> Right click on drive in question and select "Change Drive Letter & Paths."

| Ok, I think its the hard drive. My wife's laptop isn't recognizing it either-But she has weird work security on it, so I'll take it into my work and try to fire it up. |
