Does the 300D have a histogram? I heard somewhere that it doesn't but have not been able to confirm from the websites I've looked at. I like the feature, especially in full manual mode. Even my dinky little camera has this feature.

Yes it does. When you preview your photos on the LCD, you press the info button at the back to display info about the photo including a graphical histogram.

Does it show the histogram before shooting also?

I will probably be corrected but my understanding is that as it is an SLR (i.e. there is a mirror between the lens and sensor) a live histogram isn't possible

correct.. as a result, there's also no live LCD preview.. it's all through the optical viewfinder. Because of this, it's hard to preview exposure before you actually press the button and see the preview of the shot taken.

Please correct ME if I'm wrong, but from my limited understanding through research and a little hands on at the camera store... In MOST circumstances where you might REALLY need a histogram you can always take a sample shot, look at histogram, make adjustments, right?

Also in Tv and A modes there is only Spot metering ( or Cross ) and because of no preview photos coming out too dark or too light,so take several photos because you are going to scrap lot of them!

Thanks for the explanation :)

I think that the lack of a live preview (with or without the availability of a pre-shot histogram) is a shortcoming of the SLR type viewfinder. Apparently many do not seem bothered by it. Perhaps it depends on where you are coming from, what kind of camera you were using before you took up your DSLR. If you came from a film SLR, obviously no problem. But if you are coming from an EVF digicam you probably feel some loss and have some re-learning to do. I am hoping that EVF technology will advance rapidly and there will be interchangable lens digitals without SLR on the market before I outgrow my next camera.

I would love to hear the opinions of anyone who has gone from EVF to DSLR.

I went from a Fuji 602 (EVF) to a Canon 300D and I wouldn't go back to a camera with an EVF. I find EVFs to be dark, dull and impossible to focus with.

you can set in your menu [on the 300D] to have the histogram automatically display after every shot. I think someone was eluding to that already. And if you don't want to see it on every shot, then just use the little info button, which someone also already said.
The fact that there's no live preview really isn't a concern because LCD screens don't represent accurately the image exposure, I like not having it. Doesn't drain the battery and teaches me to use my brain instead.

It can´t be done. An SLR camera has a mirror blocking the light of sensor. You only view the shooting scene throught the optical viewfinder.

When time passes by you will learn that the only thing you need is a optical viewfinder of an SLR. The photographic eye distinc between what says the light meter and what you want and you will be able to read and understand you camera info.
No one camera at now, shows a real preview of the shot on LCD, except some P&S cameras a simple electronic shuter freezes the image at the point you press the button.
This is not photography is videotaping with pause botton!
