I use Lightroom to make multiple exposures from 1 shot and then use PhotoMatix:

Once I changed it to 16-bit, then I was able to do it on one image.

Bingo. You can also do the whole adjust exposure on a single RAW then combine like faidoi said, but my results for that haven't been as good, but there's every possibility that I'm doing something wrong there. I would also agree with david_c that it's the tonemapping that is so critical. An HDR image to start with always looks like rubbish.
Personally, I'm also really liking what I can do with Topaz detail to the outputs from Photomatix. It really helps to make the image pop, which sounds like one of the issues you are having. You can also go super crazy with it if you want (which I have in a few photos in my portfolio just for the hell of it), or you can just increase detail without getting that oversharpened look.

sorry Wendy--had to run away from my work computer and didn't get to answer your last email. You will only have the option to tone map if your file is a 16 bit tif. Then the option to tone map will show up in the menu(under HDR tab).

eta: I should have read through page 2. :) Like the others said...

There is a very good HDR artist I follow on flickr. He has a great tutorial on his website. He was the first photographer to have an HDR photo in the Smithsonian. If nothing else just go look at his work.

I feel your pain! I just did my first HDR a couple of days ago. Needless to say I thought the final result would come out much better. It was like expecting a great present for Christmas and getting a pair of socks. I will keep playing around with it and reading until I can improve.

I am only using 3 shots to create my HDR image. I see that a lot of folks use much more than that. I felt like three was a good starting point since I was a n00b. Can I still get good results using only 3 images?

Apologies for the watermarks. I'm still testing programs before making a purchasing decision, though I think this is the one I'm going with.

I've hardly ever shot in RAW before, but after playing with one of the few RAW files on my computer, I decided to shoot a few test shots to compare results. The first image was processed from 3 jpg files, with levels adjusted in PS Elements.

The second was processed from a single RAW file (DynamicPhoto doesn't call this single file processing pseudo-hdr - pseudo is reserved for single jpg) with no PS work except resizing for web.

I have to say after this I'm sold on RAW for anything tricky and it has the added advantage of not having to align photos, which I can't seem to get perfect even with a tripod.

With DynamicPhoto, you can do HDR with a single JPG image too.

Yes - I forgot to include that one. Single image jpg, the same one as the RAW. Very different result.
