Did you have your party already? I was a little disappointed by the guest gifts--I would have thought at a minimum they'd give everyone a DVD that could run Windows 7 until all the beta's expire. I think if MS ran the parties rather than the company they are using they would have had better giveaways. I used to beta for MS, and go to their CD-ROM conferences in the early days, and they were always very generous.
Why doesn't Microsoft give away DVDs for Windows 7--you need keys anyway to keep the copy, and you need to activate it as well. Perhaps they are just being environmentally conscious--I did always hate that AOL sent all those CDs out all the time (though that went way beyond this). Though I suspect it has to do with the availability of hacked/stolen keys in cyberspace.
For fun, I may just show Win7 on the Mac, though then I wouldn't be able to show them Media Center and how it works so well as a TV/DVR since my Mac doesn't have a tuner. (I did get Win7 64 bit installed there under boot camp with a patch to the boot loader since the Mac's boot loader is different.)
Funny, I was also going to show the great calendar app and photo gallery in Win7. And I discovered that MS took it out of Windows 7 and made it a separate download. I guess that's not a big deal and everyone was asking them to unbundle. But it's funny that they are gone from my system now, since I had them here before the upgrade (with Vista)! |
You're really hosting a Win7 party? I bet that's going to be wall to wall babes! ;-)
I'll try to make it, but if I'm late you wild guys get started without me, ok? |
Absolutely. Microsoft provides lingerie models to every party, just to spice them up. |
Will it be girl lingerie models this time? ;-) |
Why? I guess you would rather see boy lingerie? ;-D
Not me! Bring on the babes!

Wardrobe doesn't dictate what operating system I use.
It sounds like you have an axe to grind and personal problems have nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

So.....no matter what MS does, somebody's gotta bitch.....be overprotective, people whine, leave the responsibility on the user, people whine....
No matter WHAT they do, people whine.

Agreed. They will either get complaints about poor security, or inconveniences. The real solution is for users to practice safe behavior.
Some things you can do to secure your system even better:
-Use the Firefox browser, with the NoScript extension
-Install a custom hosts file to block known advertising and malware sites. This has an added benefit of speeding up loading of web pages slightly, because your computer does not waste time retrieving advertising and other stuff from thrid party sites.
Use a decent antivirus. I am partial to Antivir and AVG. Both are free and highly rated by sources I trust.
Use a spyware checker like Spybot S&D Mine rarely finds anything worse than a tracking cookie, due to the other roadblocks I have in place.
BTW, watch for the Mac to become a larger target in the future. It's not as invulnerable as Apple would like you to think. Might even be an easier target for social engineering attacks, since many Mac users think their system is inherently safe. |

Yes, best to wait until it's right. How's PhotoShop run on a 386 with Windows 3.1? |

If I waited until "it was right" then I would never use it. XP has been out since late 2001 and it probably wasnt until 2004 with SP2 that they worked a lot of bugs out of it making it fairly solid.
Im an open system engineer by trade and work with a lot of fortune 500 companies and guess what, they dont run their production environments, regardless of OS and/or hardware, on newly released products. They want enterprise class stability and you simply cant get that jumping on the newest piece of hardware or software the second its released.
Given some time to mature and for developers to run their apps for a bit I certainly hope to be switching to win 7 64bit with the adobe suit of apps but it certainly wont happen the day of release. I have better things to do than be their guinea pig, especially since I have a suitable working solution right now. |

I installed Win7 Home Premium last night, pretty nice looking, real slick. Haven't really dug into it yet to see any of the bells and whistles, but it looks pretty. |

Lightroom is 64bit and runs quite well with Win 7. The RC anyway. I'm sure the actual release is even better. |

I totally agree. I just couldn't resist making that comment in response. My company is mostly on XP still (and Office 2003), though we have a few Vista machines in the company now. I have to back up our help desk, which is providing technical support for customers with every Mac and Windows version out there, so I am putting it on my own computers. The only way for me to really learn the nuts and bolts under the hood is to have it on my own computer. I have installed it on two netbooks so far and it is also going on a spare partition of my Vista machine.
Worthy of note is that Mac OS 10.6 has given us major problems. Seems they changed some things in the plugin architecture of the printer drivers from 10.5 to 10.6 and workarounds must be used until 10.6 specific drivers are available. No problems with Win7 printing so far. The only support calls on Win7 have been to ask if there are special Win 7 drivers. We tell them it uses the same drivers as Vista. No problems reported yet. Microsoft should really latch onto this for their advertising. |
