I am amazed at the bounce in the mirror. I understand now why mirror lock-up could be a useful feature.

Yeah, I'm surprised it bounces that much too. Might just stick a piece of foam in there to help. lol
Great post! Super cool...

That mirror bounce makes me dizzy every time I trigger the shutter.
Cool clip.
eta, Maybe that's why the mirror fell out of my friends 5D. It was a common problem with them according to the Canon repair rep.

There are 7 "films" in that set. You can see 20D and 50D bounce as well, and some from-behind shutter actuation shots of film cameras. Interesting comparison of an earlier canon fabric shutter vs a more recent metal-blade shutter. Click the arrows at top to navigate.

Interesting that the rebel didn't bounce nearly as much.

Wow, I'm definitely amazed at how much flop there is to the mirror. But then, I guess that letting it decrease it's energy in that fashion is better than instantly stopping it, which would put more stress on the materials. Either way, the level of durability is pertty amazing.

Because 5D is full frame and it has a much larger mirror; thus there's a lot more mass to bring to a halt.

I also imagine there's a lot less flop because (for whatever reason) the XT's mirror returns to its original position a LOT slower. The FPS is close on the two, so I'm not too sure why such a discrepancy in return speed.

That is so cool. Iwould love to see a longer sequence with say a 1dmk3 when it is firing a 10 shot burst.

It's telling to see how the mirror and shutter are the last vestiges of the film era. The next real change will be electronic viewfinders Link, meaning no more mirror and prism, and electronic shutters turning the sensor on and off. Its all probably coming sooner than we think.
