The waves were unusually high at a nearby beach today, that didn't stop these idiots people from getting too close though.

Me personally...I'd be in the first two shots, but not the guy on the rocks. |

We were at Acadia National Park in Maine at the end of August, and there's a spot called Thunder Hole where it's fun to watch the waves and climb around on the rocks. Three days after our visit, 7 people got swept out to sea at that spot (in the remains of a hurricane) and a young girl was killed. Waves are cool to watch and great to photograph... but common sense has to creep in there somewhere.

Of course I didn't! I was smart enough to quickly turn my back and cover my camera! lol
But yeah, it was a pretty big wave. I was probably 6-8 feet behind Dave at that point and it reached me too, even splashing the camera a bit over my shoulder.
Becky-Lee didn't go completely unscathed either.
(But he's right, it WAS fun :D ) |

I would totally be the guy on the rocks.. actually the submerged guy on the rocks .. The only bit you would see would be my hand with my camera in it.. |

THREAD HIJACK!!!
Didn't want to start another one. Same title: Too close for comfort.
I feel people get their noses into their monitors. Sit back, soak up the photo. Have a beer. Take it in.
People rate photos in less than a minute. Where the hell you got to go? The economy sucks. You ain't got no job. Take a look. A far look. Not an in-your-face-I-can-see-the-chromatic-aberration-in-pixel-25723 look. Just spend time with it. From afar. Stop analyzing and go for gut. |

Hijacking Necromancy, a new category! :-)
Also, I agree with you... Me, I lean back and go on a cruise. I rarely lean up and peer, unless something calls out to me "Look closer, go deeper!" Getting too hung up on details is silly IMO.

Haha! A new category indeed!
In principle I mostly agree with Robert... I am normally looking for how the overall image connects with me as the primary determinant of how I am voting it. For that I don't really need to pixel peep. But (you knew there was a but) in keeping with my uber-geekiness, the technicals are important to me too, and nothing puts me off faster than a poor job of resizing, either way too soft, over-compressed, over-sharpened... well, you get the picture. Some things just cry out for judging at close distance.
These days, almost nobody uses a CRT anymore, so there's little excuse for over-sharpening to compensate for soft monitors. That also means it has gotten to be a more delicate balance between detail retention and over-sharpening.
Another reason to view closely, not to pick on resizing/sharpening exclusively, is that an 800px image is *small*, even when displayed on a rather large monitor. In order to view it at it's optimal distance (often cited as 1.5 times the diagonal) you'd need to get closer to the screen than I care to contemplate! |

I think you've hit it, sir. You have to lean forward to see this at 800 pixels wide. Like my first** flatmate's girlfriend: nice from far, far from nice*.
None of the photos I've ever taken in my life have been held up to scrutiny. Some have been published in corporate magazines, but they were picking through rotten apples. It's a pleasure to witness the studio skills, and be touched by the shots that lack everything but the sharp tug. And those in between affect me most.
* Old, bad joke, passed on by obligation.

I live about 45 min from ANP.. When hurricane Earl hit this summer, I was there. Awesome pics!! Awesome pics from the rocks on the edge of the water.. I was being very cautious and I know my way around the outdoors(seasoned hiker, wildlife first responder, rock climber, trained maine guide).. A VERY large (much bigger than the already 120'+ tall waves/spray) hit and i got wet and pulled towards certain death.. I scrambled away from there in a heartbeat!
Sometimes the thrill and the excitement, combined with a freak occurrence can spell disaster! |
