To all you photoshop experts:
Lets say I have a final version of a photo that I have sharpened and finalized and saved.
Then I realize I need to add a border to the photo. Since We are told not to do any altering to a photo after sharpening, can I make the image a smart object in photoshop (since smart objects keep the integrity of the original) and add border on it?
so for example,
I have a 20x30 image then I realize I want to add a 1/4 inch border to each side. So my image needs to be 19.5 x 29.5 with a .25 border on each side.
In photoshop I make it a smart object to keep the integrity, then crop it to add the 1/4 inch to each side.
Will that work without damaging my photo?

It is my understanding that performing any scaling or sizing after sharpening is frowned upon. If your border doesn't alter the size of your image, any integrity loss in the sharpening should be negligible.
Also, a good practice is to have a separate layer just for sharpening. That way you can remove the sharpening if necessary. In fact, it's good to have a separate layer for any adjustment/edit. Put your border in a separate layer, too.

Yeah I learned the layer thing the hard way.
well lets say my image size (for simplicity sake) is 2000 x 3000 but I want to add a border to the image so I add a white border crop that makes it 2100 x 3100
Even though I did not resized my image, I just added to it. Does it still affect it?

No. That's the correct way to do it. You want your sharpening to be done pre-border wherever possible. It's dreadfully easy to introduce artifacts where border meets image if you sharpen after bordering.

Yes, what Robert said.
You generally do not want to sharpen text, hand-drawn lines, borders, watermarks...those kind of things.
