OK - so after ignoring a firmware patch (for the Blu-ray/dvd) on my Vaio for ages I decide that I may as well load it. All seems good enough - it plays CD's and DVD's, but then when I put in any of my Adobe discs it now completely ignores them and pretends there is nothing in the drive . .

I can't uninstall the patch as it's not a driver, so I tried reloading just in case and so far nothing. As long as I ignore Adobe it appears to work - but I really need it to work on that as well.

Suggestions ?

Go into System Restore and revert back to the time just prior to your update.

Tried that and it wouldn't restore :-( besides I don't think that would help a firmware patch.

As I understand it a restore would change any driver settings but firmware patches are just flashed on aren't they ?

Any other suggestions ?

Yeah, I think you're correct.

Could you go to the Sony site and try to find an older firmware update and install that one?

Les - all sound suggestions.

Unfortunately I have tried them all and am no further on.

I've also tried looking up the DVD drive by model (Mashita / Panasonic) drive to get some independent dirvers but little or nothing leaps out. At this rate I will have to call those fine people on the Sony support line and bancrupt myself while they ponder the issue :- (

Does it read other software cd-roms? - Or is it just Adobe one it's failing on?

I played 'Finding Nemo' through it and it was fine, and I've tried other CD's which seemed to be fine - but it won't look at adobe.

If it's only a single disk, or a couple, try getting someone to copy them for you onto a blank and see if you can read those. As far as I'm aware Adobe doesn't insert any copy protection into their DVD's as you are allowed to make a backup.

Of course I'm ony guessing at it being a firmware issue - it might not be - but it certainly won't read adobe anymore (even stuff it's read before) while it does seem to read everything else, and my desktop will read them all.

Anymore thoughts ?

It sounds like it's only your laptop that is unable to read just the Adobe disks, and your desktop can read everything.

Like Covert_Oddity suggests, try copying those DVDs to blank DVDs and see if that works. If not, you could just do nothing and, if you get to the point where you need to use the Adobe disks in your laptop, you could always copy the contents of those disks (from your desktop) to a portable hard drive and then use that drive on your notebook to install or whatever.

not a bad plan - but my frustration is that it is refusing to read discs that it was previously happy with . . so something somewhere has changed :- (
