what to do, what to do ???? it's just soooooo blah... I can use a different sky, but I'm not sure if that's the only option, so I thought I'd throw this out there and see where it lands..

You might try this: White Sky Blues
I've used it a couple times and it can really improve an image.

That's much much better... I didn't want to "change" it, cause that's the way it was that day, but I wanted it to look like it did to the eye... did you use the gradient tool after selecting out the sky??? |

cool site.. thanks Mick.. totally forgot about the gradient tool which seems to be totally obvious to everyone else.. :-) |

Yes, that's right. Made a new layer in multiply mode filled with white, and laid a blue gradient down on the sky selection.
I also inverted the sky selection and used Topaz Detail on the inverted selection to jazz the lighting up on the people a bit, and threw a slight foreground gradient in as well.
