It is time for a macro lens, especially since my poor showing in the last macro challenge! ;op

Let the battle commence...

Both: Not a huge price difference. both f2.8 wide open, both score 9.6 on Fred Miranda, both sets of users seem to love them...

Canon: It's a canon. I have a 58mm Circ Pol. 100mm is more useable for non-Macro stuff.

Sigma: I am very happy with the Sigma I have. Reports say it may be even sharper than the canon. The extra 50mm could be really useful for wildlife macro. Comes with a tripod mount which I definitely think is a good thing.

Hmmm. Any personal stories to share? Any key features that I am missing and should be thinking about? Also, any issues with onestop digital that I should be aware of? People seem pretty happy with them on here.

I have the Canon 100mm and have always been extremely impressed with it. I don't have any experience with the Sigma but I do have to say that whenever I have bought a 3rd party lens, I have been disappointed. Not because of the sharpness but because of the slow focusing and loud motors when compared to its Canon counterpart. So, in short, I don't buy 3rd party lenses at all except the lensbaby and Peleng 8mm but those are "speciality" lenses IMO and I don't expect that much from them.

I also rarely buy 3rd party, but macro is a bit of a special case... you're not interested in focus speed, unless of course you want to use the lens as a normal telephoto also. Performance wide open may also be of less concern, for the same reason.
All that said, I own the Canon 100, and if I had to choose again, I would buy it again. Great build quality, great optical quality, reasonable price, and it makes a fabulous short telephoto lens as well.

I own the Sigma, and borrowed a friend's Canon before I purchased my own macro lens. Both are awesome lenses and are wickedly sharp. For me, the extra 50mm of reach (means more working distance from those skittish insects) and lower cost sealed it. This is one lens purchase I have absolutely no regrets about. No need to ever get rid of this one.

edit: I just saw what Sigma lens you have. I have the sigma 150.

I may not have been clear - sorry! I already have the Sigma 70-200 but I only mention that to explain that I am not worried about buying 3rd party. It is definitely the Sigma 150mm Macro that I am interested in!

You've ruled out the Sigma 180mm?

Actually I didn't even know it existed! You haven't helped!! ;op

Now I am looking at this too, and it seems to be cheaper than the 150mm Sigma, scores 9.1 on FM, several other reviews say that it is the macro lens to have... IQ equal to the canon 180mm etc etc. They all mention AF issues, but since I would mainly expect to be MF for Macro I'm not too concerned. If I am planning telephoto shooting chances are I will be using the 70-200 anyway unless it is all stationary, then once again MF comes into play.

Hmmmm. I may have a winner! So maybe you have helped after all...

yeah, but if you get the sigma 180, you'll hve to compete with Catherine, noraneko. Check out the high scores for this lens, Sigma 180 high scores, and see who 'owns' this one. Yikes! The lens is certainly impressive, at least in her hands!

I don't think it is cheaper - I have one; I could be pursuaded part with it - I have some idea that I might like the new 100m f2.8L.

the canon 100 is a great lens, and you can't go wrong, but i much prefer the 180. the closer focusing at the focal length allows for more intimate portraits, and the depth of field, focal length, and iq makes it a great lens.

the only sigma lens i have any experience with is the 120-300 2.8, and it was spectacular. the only thing i noticed was a slight lack of contrast and vibrance when compared to eht canon 70-200 2.8 IS (both easily fixed in RAW processing), and there was no obvious difference in sharpness.

so, if reviews say the sigma 180 is optically comparable to the canon, go for it.

If you decide on the Canon, I'm selling mine, I purchased the new L. See my post here.

The Canon 100mm is excellent, never used the Sigma.
