| Does anyone here know when Canon last updated the 70-200 2.8L IS? Wasn't there an improvement on the IS??? What year was that? |

| It's been a while... Rumors point to a new version (mark II) to be released with the new 1D, in Q1 2010. |

That's good because I just bought a 2007 lens and I was a fraid it might be an out of date.. |

From what I gather. the 70-200 f2.8L IS USM has gone through three "generations" of IS.
1st generation: Original IS (which seemed to have less sharpness than the non-IS version)
2nd generation: Better IS (eliminated the need to turn off IS when mounted on a tripod; sharpness equals the non-IS version)
3rd generation: Improved IS (added another stop of stability [from 3 stops to 4 stops])

Yes... I think I read about the third gen but I don't know what year it was?

I believe it was 2006 for the 3rd Generation.
