I've been requested to take picures of a dance troop
have not done such before (besides the kiddies stuff)

I am unsure at this point wether it is durring the rehersal or live performance
(flash / or staic stage lighting)
but the chance is too good to pass up

any hints or techniques i should be aware of .. ??

That'd be a dance "troupe", actually :-) Gotta get the lingo down...

I used to do this a bit. If it's during a performance, you have problems... They won't let you strobe, and there won't be enough light to freeze the movement, most likely. You'll have to use high ISO, that's for sure.

If it's during rehearsal, they may let you set up strobes, but unless you're doing staged shots (as opposed to shooting the actual rehearsal), those strobes are gonna be way out around the periphery (the dancers need all the real estate of the stage to move in, it's a 3-dimensional art) and you'll need honking big strobes, and several of them, to get any coverage.

I donno, there are a lot of variables... Sometimes you'll have a venue where the stage lighting can be cranked WAY up and that helps a lot.

Whichever, good luck with it. It's a lot of fun, actually.

thanks
have a few 'Bees so that may cover it .. (again if rehearsal)
would be fun (if i had a 300/2.8) to sit in a balcony maybe ..
but as i would figure maybe high-iso will just work ...

Check out King Douglas' work for ideas. He's really amazing and if you try to match his work you'll be in good shape.

He lists his lens selections so I assume you can't go wrong with his choices.
Keep in mind you'll most likely be shooting at a distance so settings of f1.8 or anything wide open will work nicely in low light or stage lit. With the D3 you'll have no problems cranking up the ISO...no need for the Bees.
