Check this out, largest Cruise ship ever built, in sea trials now. Be sure to check the various galleries for accommodations, sports facilities, "central park", etc. Any of you who have ever cruised will recognize how astonishing this ship is. 5400 passengers! I don't think I'd want to travel on this, personally, I prefer a more intimate ship, but my GAWD! What a paradigm-buster this one is...

You're gonna need a bigger boat.

BOAT??? Heck man, it would take an ISLAND to outdo that... Of course, compared with, say, a Nimitz class aircraft carrier this is small potatoes, but still...

They're gonna have to build a few more huts on Gilligan's Island.

It was a quote from Jaws, thats all - it seemed ironically appropriate at the time..

The moments passed now.

nevermind.

Imagine what happens at a port with 5,000 passengers all arriving at once. I was on one of their smaller ships last year, and in some places we had 40+ coach buses lined up to take tourists to see the sights. I can't imagine too many places would have enough taxis and buses to handle that kind of surge.

Random side note: I single-handedly produced Royal Caribbean's brochure in 1988.

I seem to recall that monster vessel was built right here in Finland.

Must have been an incredible sight to see her navigate the archipelago that surround the Turkku area! Pity I missed it. It's only about 100 miles away.

That's what I was thinking when I saw the pictures: I remember the Finnish Archipalego quite well, and I was thinking "Whoa! How did they get that sucker through THERE?"

Department of Random Coincidence: I took a Royal Caribbean cruise in fall of 1988.

I have photos at home of the Grand Princess in Cozumel (the largest cruise ship at the time). It utterly dwarfed "normal" ships docked nearby.

A floating prison. I would go stir crazy in a matter of hours.

Huh? I can see you feeling that way on a small cruise ship, but THIS is a fricking CITY! It's absolutely full of things to do. I doubt you could even scratch the surface on a 6-day cruise...

Tired of the golf course? Do some stretch-lining, some rock climbing, some surfing, watch a movie, play some basketball, get drunk, have a snack, read a book, take a nap, do some gambling, take a swim, hit the hot tub, do some photography, time for a shore excursion where you can visit ruins, lay on a beach, or hit up on island babes who want all your money, and best of all...

NO SQUIRRELS!

Too many people in an enclosed space for me. I even felt that way when I went to Ontario Place for the airshow recently. It's a large park, but it's crowded and there are only a few exit points and lots of fences. Southern Ontario even makes me feel a bit on edge, as there are only a few highways to get the heck out, and it's pretty crowded with traffic.

In downtown Toronto, the man can block off whatever streets he wants and you're trapped like a mouse.

I much prefer Northern New York, as it's not so crowded, there's a nice mesh of roads, and lots of mountains to hide in.

I'm definitely itching to take a ride on this baby :)

We've been on 7 cruises (#8 scheduled for the spring: Hawaii!), 6 of them on Royal Caribbean. We took a trip on Voyager of the Seas in 2001, which, at the time was the largest cruise ship in the world at around 140,000 gross tons. I bought a DVD on the trip about how much of an engineering feat it was to build such a large ship.

Last Christmas we took a trip on Independence of the Seas, which is currently the largest operating cruise ship (along with sister ships Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas) at 155,000 gross tons. Trust me, this is a big honkin' ship! We were in awe of it.

Now Oasis is set to launch, and it's a whopping 220,000 gross tons. It's hard for me to even grasp the idea of a ship that is 1.4 times larger than the Freedom class! I have had a full brochure about the ship sitting here next to me for several months. Every so often I have to wipe the drool off it...

maybe it's not global warming causing the seas to rise, but the displacement caused by all these giant ships...

:)

just saying...

//www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1212013/Revealed-The-ghost-fleet-recession-anchored-just-east-Singapore.html

though those ships aren't displacing too much at the moment...

You forgot the one thing that most people aboard a cruise ship spend the majority of their time doing... and that is eating... and overeating... and eating some more.
