Originally posted by Bear_Music: There's nothing new about it. "Blasphemy" is prohibited by the Irish constitution. The Irish courts have stricken the draconian anti-defamation laws of more recent vintage, and in so doing they have arguably acted unconstitutionally. Thus, the "new" anti-blasphemy law seeks to plug that loophole, putatively perforce of necessity. The other option would be to change the constitution, a more costly and difficult procedure. Note that since the incorporation of the anti-blasphemy wording into the constitution (I think in the 1920s?) there has only been ONE incident of prosecution under that clause, and it failed.
So it's not what it seems...

It's 'new' in that they've rewritten it. (They had to, as they were revising some other part of the bill, and this was one of the points)
However, there was a referendum just last week on the Lisbon Treaty. It would have been easy to include this constitutional change in the referendum. IMO there's no room for a law like this in a modern society. It takes us back to the dark ages where people dare not speak against the catholic church.
As you pointed out, the one prosecution failed. This law is full of holes.
Hopefully Lisbon will go ahead and the eurocrats will come in at some stage and throw it out. |

"Self-importance is man's greatest enemy. What weakens him is feeling offended by the deeds and misdeeds of his fellow men. Self-importance requires that one spend most of one's life offended by something or someone."

I will now make myself feel superior by demonstrating how much holier than thou I am by calling you an insensitive racist. I hope you're proud of yourself for hurting the feelings of all of the Hindus here, or whoever the heck it is that's into Buddah worship, not to mention all the fat bastards.
:-P |
Buddhists generally tend to adhere to the word of buddha - you have now offended the Hindus! |
Buddha IS actually one of the Hindu deities, but being as they have regional deities as well as the *main* ones, by one estimate there are 330 million Hindu deities. Some of the better-known that come to mind are
Brahma (the Creator)
Vishnu (the Protector)
Shiva (the Powerful God)
Not to mention Rama, Krishna, and a slew of others :-)

actually 330 million is too much, i do not think the figure is anywhere near it. May be few thousands.
Being hindu is very good thing in a way that one is free to worship whatever he likes. If someone does not want to worship anything that is fine too.

One might say that arguing the relative fatness of the Buddha is materialistic in the first place, as well... so there would be no offense to an individual on the Eightfold Path that adheres to the Four Noble Truths.

Not saying that one is better than the other, but all I have to say is that if Jesus Christ had been as fat as Buddah, the romans would not have been able to get him up on that cross.... |

LOL, I'm truly hopeless. I just can't figure out how on earth that would be offensive to anybody. I think I need sensitivity training or something.

Well, see, for SOME people you just can't get away with taking their gods lightly, it's as simple as that. It's the difference between, say, a guy telling you a dirty joke that begins "I was at this bar, see, and there was a hooker there, and..." and "I was at this bar, see, and your mom was there, and..."
For some people, there's some things you just can't make fun of; and for people like this, saying that "if Jesus was fat he wouldn't have gotten crucified" is just, well.. *blasphemous*...
I'm not one of those people, mind you, but I'm just sayin'

Well, of course you're not sure. I mean, isn't Agnosticism 101 all about not being sure? |
