Hey everyone,
I was in school for photography, but dropped out because it was way to expensive and the equipment was crap... Unfortunately i left before we got into flash.. we were using Tungsten continuous lighting. I have an SB-800 Nikon remote flash and want to understand flash. I've messed around with it a little but haven't really come across anything that looks good. I shoot some portrait stuff, and model type stuff.. sometimes i'm just shooting in old factories and other times i'm shooting out in the bright sunlight. I was wondering if anyone knows of any websites or had some info on what I should be doing with the flash and my camera to get good results. I know how to set up my flash to work remotely with my Nikon D300 using the pop up flash to fire the SB-800, I also have my built in flash set at its lowest setting so the built in flash doesn't effect the picture. but after that I have no clue. I also have a 9" light stand and an umbrella that has white for a soft light filter and a black that goes over the white for reflecting the light in the umbrella. I've tried shooting with a shutter of 1/125th, 1/250th even 1/60th and an aperture of F5.6... but i don't really know what i'm doing so nothing really looked that great.
thanks everyone. |

Trial and Error, practice is your best friend when it comes to learning flash. There is a host of info in the forums here. Also Google can be very useful, Do a search on Flash Photography. Also there is a site that I am surprised is not mentioned already in this thread called Strobist It is another great place to learn about off camera flash. |

Have to agree, Strobist website rocks for this stuff, it will take you a long way.
Just a couple of points I thought I'd make on what you wrote.
1) Through the comander menu on the camera you should be able to set the flash to M, TTL or "--", if you set the popup to "--" it will still fire the SB-800 but only pre-flash, ie the flash will not effect the photo (in general, but extreme close up may have a small effect).
2) Shutter speed makes no difference to the exposure of items/people lit by the flash, it will however control the ambient light exposure ie background if you have one flash and using ambient light for the background.
3) Shooting in TTL, the Flash power will adjust to meet the aperture, therefore your aperture setting is only controlling the DOF. If you haven't got enough power in the flash for the aperture the flash will beep at you to tell you.
As for angles and modifiers like umbrellas etc, again check out the strobist stuff. Oh and enjoy yourself.
