Hi All,

I cant afford Bowens.......

So I want to use a 430 and 580 EX II's off camera - under brollies / boxes

Please can you point out the good the bad and the ugly about this approach? I see it as a cheap way to get rig - that I am sure will not match ProLights like Bowens and ProPhoto etc - but it cant be that bad?

Also - how do I connect a 5D Mark II to the cameras ? do I need a long lead from the shoe to the 580? and the 580 can trigger the 430 ?

Sorry if the questions sound dumb ass - or you may think read the flipping manual - well I have ....and I am still lost

All help really appreciated

cheers all

Tony

just found this..........

//photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=422271

seems to say the 580 can control other flashes - which is great but how do I cheaply connect the camera to the 580 (which I want on a stand)

well the best way i've found would be alien bees cybercync radio triggers. work AMAZING! i just got mine a couple weeks ago and 100% accuracy so far. 400ft range, 150ft through walls.

a transmitter and two recievers would be around $170 i think

Best Canon eTTL tute you will find.

You need the 580 on camera to control the 430. It's not a cheap path but if you already have both flashes then no issue until you want more then a single light plus fill.

I am currently using a bargain bin Vivitar flash with an optical trigger and a cheap umbrella.

Flash -$5 on the clearance table at the local camera shop
Wein optical trigger- $35
Umbrella- $16 at Adorama.com
Umbrella/flash bracket- $16 at Adorma.com
Cheap tripod as lightstand- $7 on Woot.com

Total for this setup: $79

I am triggering the flash with my on-camera 430EX. Using manual mode with the power dialed down and the 430EX pointing away from the subject

I have several more cheap Vivitar flashes ($15 in a pawn shop and $10 on Ebay) but no way to trigger them yet. I have some cactus triggers on the way plus another umbrella and bracket coming. I'm sure I will be adding to the kit, but this should give me a good starter kit to learn with.

Here is an inexpensive cable to get the flash off camera. Not sure how good it is. The shutter release I bought from this vendor is cheap but functional.

I'd check out the Strobist Flickr group's board for some detailed info, but yeah...AB Cybersyncs are sweet, and the Canon ST E2 lets you get beyond 1/200. A 580EX II/ST E2 will control a 430EX II, but I don't think the 430EX I can receive wireless signals.

My 420ex worked well wireless, I would think the 430ex would too. I picked up tt1 & several tt5 pw. The 5d is capped at 200 sycn, I can shoot outdoors wide open up to 8000 on the shutter speed. I haven't gone above 800 so far and works very well....but not cheap.

Does the ST-E2 require direct line of sight to the IR receivers? as I am thinking of having the lights of stands with brollies and boxes

cheers

It depends. When I'm outdoors, yes...if I'm even 20° behind the unit, it won't fire. Indoors, it seems to be able to use the walls/ceilings to get greater coverage.

I have the calumet lite link triggers and I also use their speedlite umbrella adapter.

The only word of warning is to get comfortable shooting everythign on manual, including your flash! The TTL function will be hindered by the light loss from shooting into an umbrella or softbox.
