For those of you who post pictures to Flickr and would sometimes like to link to those pictures instead of shrinking & uploading pictures to DPC (note the sometimes, I still put many pictures in my DPC portfolio), I decided to post instructions on how to do this. I asked a few members a while back and they were nice enough to help me out and then when someone asked me, I typed this out. Thought I'd share it with the group. Of course, it may already be on here somewhere (in tutorials?) but I wasn't able to find it.
You basically need two different links from Flickr to get this to work, so it helps me to open up a separate browser (at least in Windows) to do this.
1st link:
1. In Flickr - copy the link to the picture page just from the page itself. For example: //www.flickr.com/photos/tammster1/3932044662/.
2. In DPC - Click the insert hyperlink button. You simply paste the link into that first screen.
2nd link:
3. In Flickr - Back in Flickr, click where it says "all sizes". You can choose between thumbnail & small. Thumbnail is slightly smaller than the regular DPC thumbnail & small is a little bigger (I prefer this one as the Flickr thumbnail is hard to see). After you click your choice, scroll down & copy where it says to "grab the url".
4. In DPC - The second little window asks what you want to actually display in the post (instead of the big url). All you have to do is type .
Now in the post, you should see your thumbnail. When someone clicks on it, it will take them over to Flickr.
The pros:
-In certain situations, you really don't want to have to resize the picture to upload it to DPC (I already upload many of my pictures to Flickr and to Smugmug).
-You end up with new Flickr friends. The benefit of this is that you can now see when your friends post new picture (I really love this feature, wish DPC had it).
The cons:
-DPC members without Flickr accounts can't comment at all. A few have shown frustration at that (I can't blame them).
-Most of the time if someone is looking at a DPC user's porfolio on DPC, they won't also look on Flickr (or maybe even the other way around). |
