Stopped, dead, deceased............

Out shooting this afternoon and it just stopped...no error messages, not frozen, just off and won't come back on again. Both myself and teh camera shop have tried new batteries, new cards etc etc...... Nothing! So it's winging it's way to Canon in Sydney ( or at least will be Monday morning )....... I feel like I've lost an arm........! At least I've got my 30d to fall back on....

Anyone else had any problems.......?

So sorry to hear that.

Did it by any chance break right after you took this one?

Hopefully it is a quick and cheap fix

Don't think that shot broke it, however it may have convinced the camera that suicide was an easy way out. :-)

Damn. :-(

If it ever happened to me, I doubt I'd have the patience to send my camera away and wait. :-(

Good luck.

Aug 9 my T1i basically did the same thing - powered off and would not come back on. Canon said mine was due to liquid damage, and thus I now have a less than 4 month old $900 paper weight. Local camera store got it back from Canon, and sent it elsewhere, so maybe there's a resurrection spell someone knows...

Hope your story is a lot happier than mine.

As long as the suicide was not by drowning the warranty should cover it.

Anyway, good luck with everything.

Alan

Sorry to hear this - I've not had any problems with mine yet; I hope they get it back to you really quickly. The decent thing to do would be to just give you a new one like Apple do with iPhones; easier all round.

Well thank you for your deepest sympathies (?).... No that image did not force it to commit suicide, however this weeks "Thirds" may have been the catalyst!

Luckily I have all the paperwork here (we're living in South Australia just now, home is western australia, 3 days drive away!) so shop is happy that all should be OK!

Am cleaning down the old 30d which i have here also, so could things be worse (Sad really)

I'll keep all posted, I noted that on teh web there are a few people who have had problems with the "battery housing" and had to have it replaced so we'll see.........

Yes please, keep us posted. I haven't had problems with mine yet, thank goodness, but I'd like to know what happens.

Well it's been 4 weeks now, the only news from Canon in Sydney is "we have ordered replacement body parts"........!

Yet another 10 days wait..............! Not very impressive for a $7000 set-up me thinks.......!

on dpreview there are lots of stories of 5dmk2 failures.
You could do little bit search there about which is similar to yours.
Might be help.

(5d mk2 has shown lots of problems since it was launched).

Ridiculous! They should just give you a new one.

My mate's 40D croaked on Sunday whilst we were having a braai (BBQ without the mince patties for you folk West of me), ERR 99 I think. He has taken about 150k shots out of it (rated at 100k). 1st failure.
He's also falling back to his 30D :) Let's see what our local Canon agents do with it...
Hope yours gets sorted.

Going by how many threads I have seen here where people have sent their cameras back to Canon and got them back fixed in a couple of weeks. This is unacceptable, I would be on their ass every day until it comes back. Have they contacted you at all since they told you replacement parts were ordered? Only thing I can think of is that they have a big stack of them in for repairs at the moment and can't keep up with the workload. I read an article the other day about several issues with the 5D MarkII So the repair center might be a bit backlogged. Which would explain why they had to order the parts. I think Canon let a lemon out on to the market. Hopefully they will make good to all the owners. That is a very expensive Camera, They should have made double sure that it was worthy before they released it.

Harvey,

I think that error is associated with teh lens rather than teh camera from memory. I've one lens that quite often gives that, it's something to do with teh contacts they tell me...... Get him to try cleaning the contacts, they assure me a small hard eraser ( like on the end of a pencil ) is the best......

That's the story I'm getting too - still waiting for parts. I'm just afraid that when they do get the parts, they'll find out there something else broke... I'm seriously thinking of buying a Nikon, if I have to replace the T1i. Any thoughts on the D5000?

Damn...over a month...that is a long time...i was just at the California facility to get the MK II sensor cleaned and have my 40D AF checked out and i had both back in less than a week. Hope everything works out ok for you and you get it back soon!

@dougi55: Alan, thx for the feedback. He tried that, even did a hard reset and removed the internal clock battery, nada. The Venetian blind shutter is sticking by the sound of things. It went in yesterday morning to Canon SA for a full service. I'll let y'all know how it went here with them.

@dtremain: David, I read Ken Rockwell a lot. He is pretty hard hitting and has no financial tie-in to Nikon, so I believe he is objective. He has reviews on D5000 amongst others.
I quote from his site:
"Sadly, the D5000 has only the limited controls of the D40 and most of the price of the D90, which is why I personally prefer either the D40 or D90, but if the D5000 adds features particularly important to you (like exceptional technical image quality), by all means, get a D5000."

I personally decided to spend a bit more than the D5000 (+Kit 18-55 lens) and got the D90 Body (now about USD 800 on B&H, down from USD 900 in the past 2 weeks alone and over USD 1000 in Jan). One main reason besides it's better build quality and features, is it works with the old AF lenses (My 15 yr old Sigma APO 75-300 4.5-5.6 is just as good glass and cheaper than the new 70-200 f/2.8) as well as new IF lenses.

So spend a bit more on the body and look for some old(er) glass. Even new 2nd hand lenses can be had for a few hundred USD less than retail. I am bidding on a newish 105mm Sigma Macro and near new 105mm Nikon VR Macro on EBAY atm. Should come in at USD 200 or less than retail.

Thanks for the info on the D5000. Guess I got spoiled on the prosumer and want too much and too small for too little.
