question #1: i have elinchrom universal skyport triggers. they used to work with my canon 430ex speedlite. i sold that and this year i have a vivitar 285hv speedlite. for some reason the trigger will not trigger the flash (most of the time, very rarely ill hook it up and it will fire). i talked to some people at vistek photo and they said the elinchrom UNIVERSAL skyport triggers were not designed to work with speedlites, yet it used to work with my 430ex as i recall.

what could be causing my triggers to not work like they are and how can i fix it? i found a trigger set up poll on flickr asking people what they used to trigger there speedlites and the second most common was the skyports with 100% accuacy. that is very conflicting with what i have been told by people who sell the product.

question #2: given i cant fit my skyports to trigger my vivitar 285hv speedlite my next option is to get new triggers. (pocket wizards are amazing but extremely expensive)

i've looked around and it seems the best quality trigger with good bang/buck ratio would possibly be the AlienBees CyberSync. are these compatable with speedlites or not?

I can't help with #1, but #2 is a resounding yes. Lots of people on here love them. Chromeydome, LVicari and trevytrev amongst many others were just raving about them in a recent thread. Lots of people use them as a less expensive alternative to PW's.

ETA: Thread with said raving I will also second the recommendation of Flash Zebra for all your connector needs for the remotes.

thanks a bunch! i've decided to give up on the skyports and sell them (could sell for about 70% of the cost of a AB transmitter and reciever!) and go with the AB transmitter and reciever.

add me to the list of satisfied cybersync users. And Flashzebra is great too!

How do you like the vivitar 285? Considering the cost difference between Vivitar and Canon flashes, Vivitar looks very appealing.

some of the "automatic" modes are still unclear to me but the overall performance is really pleasing so far.

pros:
- fast flash durration of 1/1000 at full power
- easy to use
- head zooms
- affordable!
- half decent recycle time (10 sec at full power i belive)

cons:
- non rotating head (only vertical from 0 to 90 degrees)
- no ttl

specs

I'd really mis the non-rotating head. :(

Still, I wouldn't be using it on camera so the rotating head issue wouldn't be as big of a deal.

Thanks
