OK, can someone please explain to me what "shoe horn" photo means and why would peopole leave this comment on so many images, without really telling the photographer, why is it such, and how to fix it?
I have not received such comment, but so many others did, so I am sure, this post will speak for many.
When giving comments, I try to be constructive and helpful. Telling someone their photo sucks does nobody any good. It increases the commenter's number of comments, but that's it.
DPC's biggest advantage is the learning and experience you get by submitting your images and getting comments that help you learn...
So common people, stop "shoe horning" your comments, and start being helpful. |

A shoehorn is used to force a foot to fit a shoe that it really does not. In the same way, a shoehorned photo is something that does not really fit the challenge, but is forced to fit, usually by the use of a clever title. I think it is a valid term that means the entry really does not suit the challenge, but you tried to make it.
For some of us, shoehorning is an art form.

So it means DNMC, which I discovered means - does not meet challenge...
I just feel for the many beginners here that are not from the Americas to understand that expression. It doesn't tell them much about how to improve thier images. |

When shoehorning is leveled at an image it doesn't contain an explanation for how the photo itself could be improved, but it explains plenty for how to improve your score; consider the challenge theme more carefully.
Personally, I don't really feel like putting forth the effort to provide a long comment on an image whose creator didn't feel the need to put forth the minor amount of effort and thought needed to meet a vague requirement for a challenge. |

Last year when I was in London a cabbie said "so you've just come from America?". I corrected him, saying we weren't from the US but from Canada. He laughed and said "Oh, decaffeinated Americans". |

Canada is in America just like France is in Europe. Mexico is in America. Mexico is in fact in North America. Argentina is in America but not in North America.
A shoehorn is an implement that helps one to put on a shoe. This may well include shoes that fit very well. When a shoehorn is used, it allows the stockinged heel to slide down the surface of the shoehorn and into the shoe, thus avoiding uncomfortable and/or damaging friction between the sock and the inner lining of the footwear.
The people of the United States of America communicate as best they can with a language that they call English. As a lot of them don't actually speak any other language, their use of English cannot be called English as second language. However, as they do have similar problems to second language speakers in their use of English, it may be more accurate to say that for the United States of America, English is a language substitute.
