ok... just bought a nikon 105mm VR lens... used of course... at a camera show... 30 day warranty... but won't be able to see the guy again until the next camera show in 2 weeks, IF he is even there... when the lens is in AF and it focuses, the minimum apperture changes from 2.8 up to 4.5.... and the max apperure changes from 32 to 57...
what's up with that?? something is MESSED inside....
any ideas here??? |

| Did you check your camera settings? Try it out in manual mode and see if it switches it. |

| Ken Rockwell review mentions focus breathing? Not sure what that is (if this is the same lens) |

I put the camera to Manual mode, then set the app to 2.8, then when I focus down towards 1:1, the app displayed on the screen creeps up from 2.8 up to 4.8...
is that because the rear element is moving away from the sensor??? it is supposed to do that or is my lens busted? |

aaahhhh that's the way that lens works I think... I Quote KEN Rockwell "At 1:1 can't open wider than f/4.8"
someone please verify this for me,,, |

seems to be just the way macro lenses work... I quote Ken Rockwell again for the Nikon 105mm f/2.8 NON-VR
"Macro lenses focus close enough that the effective aperture changes as you get closer. The TTL meter for available light and flash exposure compensates for this. The F100, unless you change this in a custom function, will read and set the true effective f/stop regardless of distance. That means that at infinity the f/stop range is from f/2.8 through f/32, but at 1:1 the effective range is f/5 through f/57. " |

Let me make just one more observation then I'll shut up.
I have used this lens and believe me, you don't ever want to use it for Macro at f2.8. The DOF is awful and you will be so disappointed. I use mine at f8 or f11 and it is as sweet as a nut! |

I totally agree... just shot this with the lens at f/9 and the DOF is almost too shallow... =)
.
not bad for a first test shot...

Not too shabby at all:)) I see you now have a smiley:) I really do believe these lens take a lot of work getting used to. I recall buying a Sigma 105mm Macro for my Canon 300D a few years ago and, I'll be honest, I didn't really understand how to use it and so I sold it as I thought it was not a good lens. Lesson 1, don't sell until you have tried to master it. I bought a Tamron 90mm Macro for my Pentax, and was very disappointed until I started experimenting and suddenly a light switched on. But, Lesson 2: I sold it when I changed from Pentax to Nikon. So, I bought the Tamron for Nikon and it was a dog, it jammed mid range so I couldn't do Macro or portrait. Lesson 3: I sold it and bought the Nikon 105mm Micro and I am still learning how to use it.
Finally, Lesson 4, keep using it, experiment and fiddle, it costs nothing and judging by your photo, it is starting to come together. Good Luck with it:) |
