Hi Guys,

I'm looking for an email provider not attached to my current Internet Provider. I've only ever had an account with my current provider so I'm clueless where to look, who's good, who's crap etc.

Can anyone recommend a service that is reliable, safe etc. and one I can access anywhere in the world.

Thanks in advance.

Lisa

I find GMail pretty good. The web interface is great and you can set it up for POP or IMAP mail if you prefer to use a mail client on your machine.

Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo are 3 of the main players.

I've been using Yahoo for about 8 years, no problems at all, very easy, fully featured and access it from anywhere.

I'm pretty happy with Hotmail. Have had my hotmail account for about 11 years now. Pretty much the only MSN product that's any use, lol! :-)

What he said. I have been very happy with Gmail. If you travel a lot, Google Calendar is very useful because it allows you to access your calendar from anywhere.

gmail is outstanding. Best spam filter I've ever seen. Being able to archive all email messages provides a very useful, searchable, history of communications.

I love it.

Thanks guys,

I guess either gmail or yahoo are the preferred. I thought gmail suffered from downtime? Perhaps that was a rare occurrence.

Appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Gmail as well!

MSN Hotmail, ok but I get a lot of spam.
Yahoo mail, better, few spam.
Google mail, opened a account 4 months ago and promptly forgot about it. I just opened it, only one message, true it was spam, but only 1 spam in 4 months, not bad.

In all the years I've used Gmail, it's had one issue of downtime that I can remember.

I LOVE GMAIL. There is also a lot of associated content that comes with it that you can use. I love their Calendar (which will text message me if I have an appointment coming up).

Gmail downtime is a very rare occurrence. It got a lot of press when it happened a week or so back because it was such an unusual thing.

I've been using several Gmail accounts for years, and I wouldn't even consider switching to any other provider. In the past I've used others and didn't like them at all.

GMAIL ... I have a few accounts and wouldn't dream of switching ...

Awesome guys - gmail it is!

I guess that downtime was the one I heard about - no problems!

I use & like G-Mail, have used Yahoo in the past and my wife has had a Yahoo e-mail addy for ten years or so.

I like G-Mail, have an iGoogle home page, use the Google calendar, which ties in to our daughter's school calendar, and I belong to a couple Google groups.

I also have a Yahoo ID, and belong to a couple Yahoo groups as well.

Either seems to work fine.

Another vote for Gmail. I've never had any problem with it.

Hotmail is a PITA and getting worse. I'd say that at least half the time I use it lately it fails to send, losing everything I've composed. The same if I try to save a draft. Gmail automatically saves a draft every few minutes and has never failed for me.

eta; Yahoo's been okay too.

I wonder how long it will be before we begin to talk about the evil empire of Google!

maybe when they start charging for services...

or, maybe when their services start not to work properly

or maybe when their services start causing security risks for the end user...

ETA - i use gmail...
