My son got a pair of binoculars for his birthday, and since it was very clear tonight I took him out to see Jupiter and the stars. We were standing in the backyard when I happened to look down and see a bright LED light in the grass. I figured the kids had left some battery powered toy out, but when I reached down I noticed a few more and suddenly there were lights all around us... not blinking like fireflies but glowing steadily. I caught a few and discovered that they're actually firefly larvae. Practically impossible to photograph in the dark, but very cool!

Yeah I actually thought they were isopods at first, but they don't have the hard scales. I've never seen one of these before, but they're obviously around since we have adult fireflies too.

What you've got, I believe, are the female fireflies, sometimes referred to as "glow worms."
