WOuld you or have you ever hacked your firmware to improve your phot quality? I have a Canon 300D and while looking for remotes (btw can anyone reccommend a decent remote for me) I came across some info that is years old about hacking the 300D firmware to 10D type. Warranty notwithstanding. Now I just can't replace my body right now or I would as its years old too and I am getting dis-satisfied. Is this something worthwhile that would make me love my camera again?
I haven't participated in the challenges in a really long time. Really long. And I kind of miss it. So I have taken my photo equivalent of years of tangled christmas lights and trying to sort and organize my thousands deep file tree (Just shoot me instead ok?) so that it doesn't happen again. But I really don't know how to get back into the game. My pictures are inferior and I know it. I shoot the same things over and over again every summer and bury my camera under layers of wool in the winter (too hard to take nice pictures when its effing dark all the effing time .. I am already hating that I have to wake up in the dark to go to work every morning.)
Sorry I seem to have lost focus.
Main points:
- hack or not hack firmware
- what to look for in a good remote
- what makes for a good *non-date-sorted* file tree
- how to get back into the challenges and *improve*

You have been in the top 20 twice in only 37 tries, your images are good, and on the cusp of great. |

Nothing wrong with your camera -- look at what others have done with it |

If the firmware hack (CHDK probably) does something you are desiring that the camera won't do right now, then go for it. Otherwise, you really will not gain much. Still fun to try, and if it is the CHDK hack, I have installed it on my Powershot S5 a couple of times. It is not actually a replacement firmware, but rather enhancement code that is loaded from the memory card when the camera boots.
I agree with the others, You can do great stuff with that EOS-300D, and with 3 6+ scores, you are certainly getting there.

Jump in and damn the torpedoes. Comment on others stuff, especially the ones you give mediocre votes to. By making yourself examine the entries this way, you will learn things you can apply to your own photography. You will also get to know the other members. This bring me to another thing I have found to be a very strong learning experience. Well intentioned, but honest pre-challenge feedback from others. I do this back and forth with a few others, and we just agree to not vote on the others entry if it should come up. We learn an awful lot that way.

In response to your "remote" question, I could not justify the overpriced Canon remotes, so I purchased a wired and wireless remote from ProCameraGear.com for my 20D/40D. Shipping was quick and the remotes work great. The wireless is not IR (infra-red light), it is radio. That allows it to go thru walls and it works outdoors even in bright sunlight.
I keep the batteries out of the wireless remote so they don't drain if the button gets accidently depressed in the bag.

They look and feel cheap (made in China), but they work well and the price was right!

I just bought a wireless from Amazon from a vendor on Amazon. I intended to buy a wired shutter release, but they sent me a wireless model for some reason. It seems to only have a 3 or 4 foot range, but for $15, I got my money's worth. Definitely cheap stuff here. If it breaks, I'll get a better one next time.
