...On an external hard drive. I am looking for some more space to store my photos, ideally with an integrated back up solution built in. The Drobo looks pretty sexy, but I think it is bit more than I actually need. I found this:
//www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822154355&cm_re=lacie_2big_quadra-_-22-154-355-_-Product
Which is relatively cheap, and more than enough space for me. I was wondering if anyone here has any kind of experience with this drive, or know anybody who has one.
Thanks in advance guys... |

That's lot pricier than a 1Tb drive tends to go for these days. I can buy a terabyte Seagate or Maxtor for $100 or less. I would assume there is something about the Lacie that justifies the extra $$. I know they have been around a while and have a good rep.

Agreed, though it is 2 x 500GB, and you get pretty painless RAID functionality (it seems...) |

I would go for something like..... Dual External and a pair of Drives
Same price point give or take and double the storage... BUT it's got less interface points. If you want a single external housing, try something with a fan @$50 and get one of those drives.
Edit: I forgot this forum does not convert links... editing to do that. Also I have one of those enclosures and handles raid okay for what it is.

That's the difference that I didn't pick up from the specs. |

| I currently have 3 Drobo's and IMO they are freaking awesome, and the level of service that I got from them recently on a problem I had with one of the units was top notch to say the least, I would definitely recommend them over any similar back up solution if even for the simple fact that unlike RAID you can mix sizes of drives with no problems at all... |

I've been sticking with 500GB drives as well ... I've had much worse luck with the 1TB sizes ... also, I highly recommend external enclosures with fans, and maybe even set up an external fan to blow over your drives -- I've been seeing heat-related failures lately, and I think most drives are only rated to about 95°F anyway -- not all that warm these days ...
Or go this route ... |

Or this. With 5 one or two tera byte drives. Then if one goes tits up, you just take it out while the whole thing is running and put in a new one and it rebuilds itself.
Oh, forgot to add, I think this is hardware raid so hard drive size don't matter as long as the replacement drive is the same size or bigger than the broken one.

*defensively*
It's not the size of platters, its the data they hold! :) |
