Hope this is not too stupid a question but just want to be sure. Does a tonemapped image from a single RAW file also qualify as an HDR image for this challenge?.

I'd guess so, since there isn't a rule requiring multiple exposures. I think it's more intended for the look. So if the voters think you single capture tonemap LOOKS like HDR, you'd be fine. Again, just my feeling.

The official word from Slippy is... YES!

I think if the voter can't tell the difference, then it's fine. There may be some voters that will low vote if something about the shot clues them in that it is not created from multiple exposures. Such as frozen action.

I hope so as it's what i've entered. I did check with the first HDR challenge and there were numerous single shot entries.

Any image that people perceive as being HDR will qualify, whether it be a tonemapped single image, a combination or exposures using some HDR software, or a single image that you process to make it look HDR.

Further, you cannot get DQ'd for not following the challenge description. You only can get DQ'd for not following the challenge rule set (or any special rules in place for a specific challenge).

... I'll be voting 1 for any frozen action shots, dammit! ;-)

Its OK but if you win all you get is a pseudo-ribbon. Oh wait, that is all we get anyways.

Yeah, the voters will hate you. WE love you, however.

I suspect i may get slammed for not being HDR enough although i spent so many hours on the image i'm not even sure myself what looks HDR or not!

But you are not yet on his enemies list. You need to try harder.

I don't know. I don't know anything.

All I know is that I've been working all day under a incorrect assumption. So I had to start over. I've shown two friends. One doesn't like it at all, the other likes it quite a bit.

and I don't know anything.

In other words, she'll only pull a 6.1 out of this.

Nope. I'm using up all my luck this week. It's been a spectacular week. I'm destined to head back down to my 5.5 streak. There's no way that my luck will stand with a challenge that I don't even understand (or 9s, which I haven't come up with anything other than something impossible.) So I'm happy with this week and perfectly willing for everything to go down hill, because it's been a very nice hill.

Here's one I processed in Photomatix from a single Jpeg I took some time ago.
