Seriously, the Strobist site I put up earlier will probably teach you the most about speedlight use. It's really in-depth and the instruction is priceless. Something else you might want to check out is The Hot Shoe Diaries. It's got a lot of good info but it is more CLS based. Remember you can always get an SU-800 to do what the SB600 won't.
Keep in mind you don't need to dedicate yourself to Nikon flashes (which cost more) unless you want ETTL CLS support.
Lots of lower cost options.

I agree... the CLS system is probably more useful for amateur photogs in the D60 class than it is for people in the D3/D300 market anyway due to limitations on outdoor functionality and all that. Never made a lot of sense to me...
