Ok, i might as well ask it here since the people at adobe think(know) im an idiot.

i have never been able to view RAW from my 5dii in photoshop. it sucks. as many times and ways as i try to install the update (5.4 i think it is) it never works.

today i discovered that you need to do somethihng with properties and plugins and property inspectors. at this point i am seriosuly confused.

can some just expain to me how to get the damn plugin to work so i dont have to start killing people?

What version of Photoshop are you running?
08/30/2009 02:52:45 PM · #3
I seem to remember that the ONLY way I got this to work was to dowload the latest version of the Adobe Updater utility and then run that. After it had done its thing all was well. I had a number of goes at other ways but this is what worked for me.

You need CS4 for the 5D II RAW files. Likewise the Adobe raw Converter you need only runs on CS4.

So the question is . . are you on CS4 ?
08/30/2009 10:27:21 PM · #5
Yes i have CS4. and i did run all the adobe updates hoping it would work, but nothing happened really

Probably not the answer you want, but if all else fails, you can download and install Adobe's free DNG converter and use it to convert all your RAW files to DNG. You retain all the RAW data and adjustment ability, and Photoshop will be able to read the files and open them in AdobeCamera RAW.

This is what I have to do with my G10 files, since CS3 won't update to recognize them.

But if you can figure out how to simply update CS4, that would probably be better :-)

i actually did the DNG converstion thing for a few months, but it fills up hard drives like no other. i was hoping to just deal with RAW itself

I think the solution you want is Lightroom. You do all of your major adjustments and sorting and previewing and printing while the files are still RAW. Then only convert when you NEED a jpg or DNG or whatever for some reason. I do all of my basic corrections first in Lightroom and only convert images when I know I want to do some special PS work, saves a ton of file space.

Are the DNG files actually that much larger? I guess I never bothered to look - I just assumed that since they were holding the same data, they would be about the same size. But then, I don't embed the RAW files in mine, so perhaps that's why.

this is what ive been doing now. but most of the stuff i shoot i have to run through different programs that cant read the RAW, eg photoshop, portrait pro, photomatrix. so i guess ill just keep doing what im doing. ugh

it just means i have twice as many files, if not three times. cause i have the RAW, the DNG, and then the jpeg if i need to print or whatever

Thing is, if Lightroom works, so should CS4. They use the same camera raw engine.

Have you tried reinstalling CS4? (be sure to backup any actions/presets you've created so you can reload them)

Also, you only need version 5.2 of the RAW converter so try downloading and installing that.

Katherine, apologies for sounding pedantic but 'running all of the adobe updates' is different from running the Adobe Updater utility. For me, I had downloaded the ACR update and Photoshop update separately and my computer could show the CR2 images in other applications but I could only see them in PS CS4 once I had dowloaded and run the separate utility. It took me ages to do it because in my mind I had already updated everything.

Are you sure you put the raw plugin in the right place for PS to use it? Just asking.

;O) Just something to verify. Adobe Updater should help though.

One thing you can do to try and verify the raw plugin version in ACR is to load a jpeg into ACR (since your raw files don't load). To do this you'll need to set a parameter in CS4.
