Try this tutorial from strobist

only had time for one quick setup tonight and was careless about aperture.
so, back to shallow dof. Still, it was fun.
And, yippee, my first recognizable crown - wonder what I did.

Now you tell me!! Drat! I just guessed, and I was going to stick with what I had and move on.

Now I have to go look and see what I should have done...

here's a rather rudimentary set up that I have been using (with various color and material modifications during this exercise. The Strobist guy has a wonderful setup going, but way too elaborate for my way of life.
Note, the 'off-camera' flash is mounted on the handy cocoa can and is pointed at the backdrop as the strobist guy suggests.

I actually got a picture of a water drop colliding with another water drop!! Unfortunately, it wasn't very picturesque. :(

Once you have worked on any godzilla images, you may find they infect your computer.
this appeared today in the middle of perfectly innocent experimentation of waterdrops.

I may have (ahem) done a little editing on this one.

That still leaves us with one day plus today to play, right. Monday, the 31st?

In any event, I'm still playing and getting more undecided as to what to enter. LOL, if this lasts much longer, I'll never make up my mind!

I think I have one of those collision images (using lots of imagination, please). Looks as if the setup by RMezzo using a much taller drop point is the way to go. Anyhow, here's the latest crop:
...
ETA - hojop25 has some splendid images for a first attempt. Addictive, isn't it.

Has anyone tried a heavier material such as glycerin or vegetable oil?...or motor oil...or a combination?

vegetable oil was a non-starter for me. It was impossible to control the drops.
glycerin works well, I think. I just experimented it within the last two days and it has possibilities.

Motor oil? Not in MY kitchen!
:-))

Naw, pretty much stuck with water. Though I tried dropping milk into colored water. Water worked better, imo. But didn't try anything heavier than that.

Ok, that's it!! no more water drops for me! (I said that yesterday, but had to try setting up a collision. We actually had a valve, so I tried rmezzo's strategy. No collisions, but got this shot:

There were actually some very odd things; I'm not even sure how this one could happen...

Ok, it's down to the wire!! The water drop side challenge ends tonight at midnight EST. You have a little over 7 hours to get your final water drop shot posted in the following thread: post your final water drop shots here

I just heard from IreneM, and she will have the winners posted by tomorrow night. (She's busy tonight after the challenge ends. Plus I'm sure she needs more time to properly digest our fantastic shots!)

Good luck, everyone! I can't believe that I'm trying one more time, but I'm off for one *FINAL* attempt. (I think that's the 8th time I've said that. And unfortunately, I'm not getting better. Some of my first shots are still my favs :D )

Yes, I know it's right down to the wire. But I'm still playing!
I've got about four (including the one above) that are favorites and only one will fit.

The one above was the most recent to the list. That's when I found that
adding glycerin and DAWN dishwashing liquid to the mix gave some
very nice sturdy images.

I am now going to pack up my equipment and retake my kitchen counter.

Yes, I am... I really am... right now.

Oh, yes. And these two also from today - Dawn does the trick!

A few outtakes from tonight's session:

It was fun revisiting this experiment

I didn't get mine in on time...but it isn't very good anyway, lol. This is lots harder than it looks!
