My 5d mkii has a rather painful issue with focus hunting. I don't mean low-light, low quality lens hunting either. It happens with all my lenses (all L glass except for the 50mm 1.4) and in the middle of the day and I'd say at least 50% of the time now. Are dirty, dusty lenses or sensors possibly a cause or is this something that the camera needs to go in for? Any ideas?

Well, I donno, honestly. I mean, there isn't a camera alive that can find focus on a white wall or a featureless blue sky, to name just two examples. So if your chosen focus point is on a featureless area, you are gonna get seek...

But you're experienced enough, I'm positive, to have determined it's not that simple?

I'd think you'd have to have absolutely filthy lenses to cut contrast enough to defeat focus, so that's out. The sensor has nothing to do with focus, so that's out...

Check your manual. On the 40D there is an option you can set on your camera to cut down the excessive hunting. (I've never tried it, but I remember reading about it.)

Also, Check your lens setting. I know that if I'm using my 100-400L at a close distance, I need to set that on the lens itself, otherwise it will do excessive searching.

Hmmm, if it hunts even when the subject has good contrast and there's good lights, in situations where another body with the same lens doesn't hunt, then I'd suspect something with the body. Ahat focus point(s) is/are active? If you set it to center-point only, does it make any difference at all?

Yeah, it's not situations that would normally induce focusing problems...it's definitely something more than that.

I do see that there's a way to turn focus search off in the custom functions so I can try that but I'm curious as to whether it will focus at all then? I wonder if my autofocus is somehow broken? Or breaking since it does work sometimes. I don't have tiiiiime to ship it off!
