OK, I am in the market for a new full-frame as I am about to retire my 5D after a few good years service. Now, my assistant shoots with a 5Dmk2 and the high ISO quality is unbelievable - he shot inside a church at iso3200 the other day and I would say it was as good as the original 5D on ISO 800, and that's no exaggeration. It far surpassed the 1dmk3 at ISO1000

Now, since I am happy with my 1D mk3 for general day to day use, I would like a new full-frame - I was just wondering if anybody knew how the 1DS mk3 performed at the higher ISOs? Is it noisier at 3200 than the 5D mk2? Is it worth me waiting for the 1DS mk4 to be announced/released or shall I bite the bullet now and get the 5D mk2?

If anyone has any real-world experience (I am not interested in graphs and stuff) of shooting these two cameras side-by-side at high ISO then I would love to hear your impressions.

Thnx.

I can't answer your question as thoroughly as you'd like, since I've never laid my hands on a 1DsMkIII. What I can say is that the 1DsMkII is no match with the 5DMkII when it comes to noise. The difference is significant enough, for me, to expect the 5D2 to hold its current reputation as a rare beast indeed for a little while longer. I cannot imagine equally drastic improvements to noise reduction beyond this point quite yet.

The assistant may just have three legs and an adjustable head...

I think there was a comparison over at DPReview of this when they did the 5dmk2 review. There are some graphs but also those pictures of the queen's head at varying ISOs.

I've done a bit of shooting recently at 6400 ISO with the 5D MK II and found that is really good in predominantly dark but high contrast situations, where I can raise the black point without losing much of significance. Here is an example from my recent (poorly received) 'Pink' entry:

This was with one pass through Dfine. I can post up a full size jpeg from the original CR2 file if you want.

I've had much less success with fully dark scenes in which the areas of interest aren't well differentiated from the background - though this one isn't too bad:

Fellow Traveller

Albeit with a bit more of an elaborate post-process.

Not much differnce at all, so might as well look at the 5Dmk2.

In actual fact I have two I rotate and I actually think they enjoy working with me.

One of them is on here.

If you are ever over in England slippy you are more than welcome to come and assist for a day.

I'm surprised your not holding auditions for a caddy in the golf open photo contest :-)

Hey Mark,

I thought my ear's were burning and then I see you're posting messages about my unbelievable camera control to get amazing results in Low Light with the 5D MkII!

I assist (I prefer second shoot :0) ) for Mark quite regularly and apart from the beatings I get if I miss focus it's always a good laugh and a very creative day with the cameras.

I love the 5D MkII as a wedding and studio camera, I think it's the perfect tool for the job. It would be cool to have a second memory slot for JPG backup but the battery life from a single battery (No battery grip) lasts almost an entire wedding (bridal prep to first dance) and with the option of SRAW1 you get the same size files as the 1D Mk3

So was it decided that the 5D MkII is better then the 1Ds MkIII or not?!
