Don't necessarily think he should have ribboned but I think you are being a little harsh. Are you the one doing all the 1 votes? Lets not get mean, i mean, you created a thread to bash a photo...

NO, I am not the person giving all the 1 votes. How the heck could I do that with only one vote per photo? I didn't even vote on this challenge. Do I give 1's? Sure, when they are, in my opinion deserved. You must think you are psychic to make a statement knowing why I created a thread. From the website Forum section...

"Challenge Results"

"Discuss challenge results here. Did the winner deserve to win, or did another photograph?"

If you have a problem with this discuss it with SC.....And Don, that was rude and uncalled for.

Everyone who is attacking this photo you are a major a$$hole, honestly its a good photo, I enjoyed it so much I favorited it. That's why it came in 2nd place. Even if it isn't your favorite photo don't openly disrespect it, critique it with a comment on it. That's where it should end, no threads created to talk about it in a negative light. If someone did this about your photo think how you'd feel.

Well, to be fair, as David Ey pointed out, the forum does specifically ask "Discuss challenge results here. Did the winner deserve to win, or did another photograph" under the heading... so it's not really out of line or anything. When you enter your photo into any contest here, it should be assumed that you will receive comments you like and those you don't. Usually the ones you don't want teach your more about your photo anyway.
I only saw the results afterwards since I wasn't near a computer, but my first impression of the photo was sparks, as somebody else said, because of the lighter portion in the bottom right.
I'm of the opinion that it was a visually interesting way to portray a ribbon. I agree that ridding the photo of the "strays" might enhance it some, but it's moot because any enhancement that leads to an eventual DQ is pointless.
Sometimes it's obvious that photos score well here due to their "WOW" factor, and sometimes it's more evident that it is the idea or the concept that win folks over. It goes both ways.

I see. Well, I would've given it a 5. I don't see how it finished as high as it did either, but DPC voters are like women - no sense trying to make any sense out of 'em. oops, was that out loud?

I know that you men have problems figuring things out -- DPC, women, 2+2, but keep trying, someday the brain might start working. :P

Hmmm - did you type all those words yourself, or did you get your husband to help? Hahhhahahaahahahaha

A man walks into a store that sells brains. One brain was labelled "man's brain $3000" another was labelled "woman's brain $50. The man asks the salesperson, "why such a large difference in price"

The sales person responds, "Because the woman's brain has been used"

hahahhahahahahahahah!

OMG... I don't even have to continue reading this thread.. nuff said.. lovin you Wendy !!!!!!!! made me burst out laughing... my husband had to come into the room to see what was so funny.. lol..

OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and calling people names is somehow more mature and respectful then discussing a winning photo, IN THE "LETS DISCUSS THE RESULTS OF THE CHALLENGE" forum..... Even if you dislike what someone says, there's no need to call them names.. It only disrespects yourself and DPC... come on now..

Ahh now you pissed me off. Nobody disrespected the photo. Refer to the Forum description as noted above that encourages this type of discussion.

I couldn't care less if people say how much they disliked my ribbon winning photos - these are subjective opinons.

edited out some filthy sailor talk. j/k! ;-)

I think this could be an interesting discussion. You hear all this talk about how DPC is a "learning" site, yet when a winning photo is questioned on how it's put together the conversation gets shouted down as "attacking" the photo.

We have the "Posthumous Award" thread where people post photos they were "surprised" at how they placed, or thought that some photo perhaps should have won a ribbon in their opinion. That's not much different than how this thread started in a way.

What was brought up in the OP was that the photo being discussed had what appeared to some as stray debris/string, etc... Many, many times, a good photo will get nit-picked for a small highlight that's blown out, or (frequently) remarks will be made about a couple of minor specks on a piece of glass should have been caught, etc... So I can see how the OP may have been surprised at the accolades this photo rec'd based on prior known examples here at DPC. Personally, I had a few other photos that I would have picked over this one to ribbon, but that's my opinion. I liked this shot and gave it a higher than avg score, but it wasn't one of my "top" picks.

Oops...cross-post in the realization of a mistake. But what I think still doesn't matter.

I see like 4 problems at my PB, i received a 6.24 with a shot i almost didn't submit. I'm not complaining at all, i just loved my first 6! But that made me see one more time how different people think and see things. The shots i liked most were the worse scores until now.
That's good because it makes us see things from a different perspective, i think.

haha sorry I didn't mean to come off so strongly, I meant that people can critique but I just was trying to say it would be more constructive to bring it up with the photographer then talking about it in a thread. I agree it's good to challenge winning entry, I just feel it should be done in a critiquing manner rather then discrediting the photo or saying it didn't deserve to come in the place it did. I was mad about something outside the site and this thread just was the first one I opened, so it was bad timing. I don't know any one here really well so I shouldn't have called anyone an asshole based on a thread, my apologies to anyone who felt offended.

If this site is for learning and mutual self-education, isn't it better to have a public discussion, if the critic and photographer are willing? Doesn't "more learning" occur if you ask a question in class, rather than discuss it privately in the professor's office later?

If you have something personal to say to the photographer, then sending an IM might be a good idea, but if you have something to say about someone's photograph, then the forums are the appropriate place indeed ...
