Well, we have often recommended games to each other on this website. Usually they are of the “maddeningly addictive” puzzle game variety. This time however I bring you a real-time strategy game called “Evony”. You may have seen the ads around the net for this “free forever” game, and right off the bat I want to say this game really is free. Sure there are ways to spend real world money in this game, but it is never high pressured or “in your face”.
If you don’t like RTS’s you can probably stop reading now, but if you are a fan of games like the “Age of Empires” series, I think you will really get into this game. One of the aspects of this game that at first seems maddening actually becomes what I think is one of the better parts of this game. When you do some construction or research it takes real time (lower levels go fast getting longer as you level up). For instance, if you click to raise your town hall to a level 10, it could take around 40 to 50 hrs of real time! However if you are like me and have a life outside of games, this is actually really nice. When you have a few things like this going on in the game, you can leave the game and things continue without you. It’s a browser based game, meaning nothing to download and install, so you can simply close the browser and come back later to check on things. Another nice aspect of this game being browser based is that if you’re like me and like to waste time at work you can keep your eye on it throughout the day!
The game starts you out with a 7 day “Beginner Protection” so you don’t have to worry about some 12 yr old pouncing on your town first thing! There is an extensive quest system designed to get you started and help you rise up the rankings on your server. You do this by building, creating additional towns, researching technologies, etc.
The game has (from what I have experienced so far) a great user community that is very helpful, and like most games of this genre, you can form alliances. These alliances (for the most part) are really just focused on helping their members and coming to their aid if attacked. The staff is also very helpful and seems to be quick to respond if you have any technical issues.
You may be wondering why I have posted such a long review and the answer is that I would love to play this game with some of my buddies from dpchallenge! And also to ease any fears you might have had about getting into a free online game.
So check it out at www.evony.com and look me up! Smardaz on server 49! I’ll be waiting.

I played evony pretty solidly for about 6 weeks. It is a highly addictive game. In the end, I realized that if I didnt stop playing I wouldnt see sunlight again, so I quit about 3 weeks ago. I dont miss it, but it was a great time waster.

Can you choose which server you're on?

I remember playing a game much like this ages ago, but I can't remember the name... or maybe I'm imagining it :)

Yes...you can choose whatever server you want. I would suggest the newest server possible, so that everyone else is starting out as well. If you pick an old server, there will be some big, and experiences players willing to plunder whatever you have.

Evony used to be called Civony.

Okay, it didn't give me a choice when I registered but I guess it will next time I log in. I'm on 59 atm.
Hmm... Civony doesn't ring a bell... I dunno!

Smardaz, lol, I'm sure you don't want me in your alliance until I have at least a fraction of a clue what I'm doing! I'm working on the quests, which definitely help.

when you get around to building an academy, make sure you research "construction" to shorten those research times

You are limited to how many times you can chat in the world chat. But once you join an alliance, you have unlimited chatting within your own alliance.

I played it for a while a few months back. Once you get out of newbie protection it's really tough.
