Soooooo..... rule of 3rds, well established artistic rule.

I turn on the grid in my Nikon D90 view finder ... up comes the grid, dividing the view into ..... (drum roll) .... QUARTERS !!!!! zorks sake ....

Ok, bring the photo into Nikon capture NX2 (shoddy use of Microsoft .Net framework but gorgeous non destructive, unlimite editing btw), grid options.... yay number of divisions 3 .... (fanfare for this one) ... the grid always centres the cross hairs ...... :-(

Someone oughta' tell the camera manufacturers and software writers about the rule of 3rds.

You know, my Powershot S5 has a thirds grid on it (which I am using again until I repair/replace my damaged Rebel), but I've never used the grid.

PSP has a couple of built-in grid views: 'Rule of Thirds', and 'Golden Ratio' (available under scripts)

Good luck! :-)

The rule of thirds is a good reminder not to slap every subject dead center. For most situations it doesn't have to be precise.

Can you use one of the focus points to estimate?

So THAT'S where they hide it!

Quite so, I've always considered it to be a rule that is deduced when analysing satisfying photography rather than a rule that is followed to produce a satisfying photo.

All the same though with the challenge title 'rule of 3rds' one is going to need some degree of precision 'cos I dare say the DCP voters will have their rulers out :-)

Agreed. I also expect there will be some use of the rule that will be more subtle and some voters will not recognize it's usage. There is hit you over the head obvious, where the subject is placed at the thirds intersection, and then there is the use where your eye is guided to that zone by the composition.

I have always love the grid in NX2.
I wish more cameras had AF points based on the rule of thirds.

Aaaaahhhh now I understand why the non member open challenges are called 'Exclusive ....' - I've submited to the Drama challenge and now I just took a look at the "Rule of 3rds" and found out :-o

Guess I don't have to worry about grids anymore :-)
