My entry to the Road Signs Revisited Challenge.

Title: Caution: Horse Crossing

Eh...I broke 5. ^_^ But um, I thought it would have done better. I really wish I had been able to focus on the sign, when I took it I didn't realize what it looked like and didn't adjust. Stupid automatic camera... -_-

Sorry about the plastic horse. I haven't been able to be around real horses for quite a bit, so that was out of the question. No one would have been able to tell if I could have kept there from being a reflection on his head.

I would really like to know what you voted it, why, and any possible ways of improvement.
Thanks!

perhaps my problems were..... something with the how it is set up. the bottom corner of the sign 'just' get cut off by the picture... the head of the man seems uncomfortably close to the edge of the frame, the left corner of the sign is not positioned well in relation to the horse. and yes as you said.. i don't think the plastic horse helped anything. the lines lead me off the photograph.. the sign's 'lines' are pointed to the left.. off the picture, and the horse is running off the picture. i am not sure so much of the sign is need to get your meaning accross...
hopefully some of these helped.

You'd need more than to get rid of a little reflection for that not to abviously be a plastic horse.

I voted you a 4. If you want a high-scoring shot of this set-up still life type, there are a few things you need to work on. These are primarily lighting - doesn't have to be expensive studio lights, desk lights are perfectly adequate, and paper is great for reflectors and diffusers. Backgrounds - carpet ain't great, it turns into a mess when seen close-up - again paper is fine, bedsheets aren't bad but be careful about creases looking ugly. You need to realise that people like clean, bright images here - smoothness counts for a lot: the dents in the sign don't help, the strange edge of the sign likewise, and I already mentioned the carpet background.

Lighting isn't about just making an object visible, remember: it's also about shaping that object, or rather about showing the shape and texture of an object.

Hi Ami - I would have preferred just to see the sign and loose the horse altogether so I gave you a 5 for this. The horse in the background just does not work for me.
