Hi all,
I have a shoot in two days that is going to involve 4 families. They want a large group shot and then individual group shots, can anyone give me some tips on shooting large groups?

Arrive early but don't start taking pictures until the scheduled time.
Be in control but not bossy! :)
Roll with the punches
More than likely some family member will want their picture taken "insert horrible background, bad lighting location here". Humor them but don't change your plans unless you have some extra time.
Don't be afraid to ask people to stand, sit, recline, whatever if it needs to be done. Take some small plastic bags to tuck under people's knees or bums if they need to sit or kneel on grass or the ground.
Don't tell them you can swap faces and smiles around until after they get the proofs... Otherwise you'll have everyone wanting to do the switcharoo. Use the head/smile swap as a last resort to make someone look good.

| If you have a really large group it can help to shoot them from above (as from a 6' or so step-ladder), because it lets you "stack" people more deeply than a straight-on shot. You don't have to worry as much about having the shorter people in front, etc., and people often look thinner when looking up. By having the people in a more circular arrangement than in a long line you won't have to use as wide a lens, and should get less distortion of the people at the edges. |
