So, my Rebel XT will no longer turn on (bought April 2006). Minimum charge to repair it is $190 (via sending it to Canon). I do have access to a 5D Mark II through work, and a friend has lent me her XT (her backup cam), but I'd like to get another DSLR.
Canon rep today told me Canon has a loyalty program which gives me three options, other than repairing my XT:
1) Buy a Rebel XS kit with 18-55 IS lens for $359 + $10 shipping.
2) Buy a 50D with kit with 28-125 lens for $759 + $10 shipping.
3) Buy the 50D, body only, for $629 + $10 shipping.
In all 3 cases, I send them my non-functioning XT in the box the new cam comes in.
Now, I also like the Rebel T1i for its video capability, being a video guy at work, but there's that 5DM2 at work, and a Panasonic TZ5 P&S that does video.
Or do I see if I can get a better deal on a XSi? It seems that this loyalty-program 50D is a pretty good price...I could even get it with the kit lens and maybe sell it off for more than the $130 price?
Do you think I'd really notice a downmarket change from the Rebel XT to the XS, or probably be happy with the improvements?
Your advice would be appreciated. |

| I don't know what you mean by "downmarket change", but for that price, the XS is a nice deal and the nearest current replacement for the XT. If you can afford it, however, I'd say go for the 50D. Way more camera. Much better low light performance, faster burst speed, etc. Superior in every regard. Whether to get just the body or kit I think is merely dependent on if you want that lens, or want to go to the trouble of selling it afterwards. |

I'd personally go for the 50D with kit and sell the lens. Heck I've been considering buying one as a walk around for my mom. If you buy the kit I'll toss you the $130 difference when you get it.

| I meant downmarket in the sense that it seems Canon rates the XS as a lower-level line than the typical Rebels (the numbering is four digits instead of a 3-digit designation like the XT, XTi, XSi and T1i). But a new XS is an upgrade to a 2006 XT... |

Dude....50D, are you kidding me? With the 28-135 USM? Grab it, before they come to their senses. ;-)

| Thanks for the replies...still need to think and shop. I'm (obviously) not a pro photog, so it might come down to justifying the extra cost for the extra performance/features of the 50D. Oh, and I hadn't realized that the 50D kit lens is usually about $400... |

| Get the beat you can afford, if in this case that's the 50D then go for it. If you get the cheaper model just now, somewhere down the line you'll regret it and wish you had taken the deal on the 50D while you had the chance. |

Dood, seriously?! Buy the 50D! Whether or not you pick up the kit lens depends on what kind of glass you already have, but either way it's a steal! I wish I still had the box for my 30D...if I did, I'd be very tempted to "accidentally" drop it so I could get this deal too! As David said, jump on this before they change their minds!

| I hear ya guys, it's just that it seems even the XS is a good improvement over the XT. (BTW, Alex, I don't need the box to do the loyalty program.) |

OK, how about this aspect: the warranty on the loyalty-program cameras are 90 days, (not the 6 months I had heard tossed around), unlike the 1-year warranty for a new Canon.
Of course, you could say that the refurbs have gone through QC twice... |

| How did you get them to offer this to you? I called them about repairs to my XT yesterday and not a thing was mentioned. Perhaps I didn't get far enough into the red tape before getting sent to the parts people. |

Well, the first time I called about my XT, the rep didn't mention the loyalty program. The 2nd guy I talked to when I called later asked if the earlier guy had mentioned the program. So, I guess the thing to do is just ask. Or, just call direct: the number for the loyalty program is 1 866 443-8002.
I asked about my 6-year-old Canon A70, and there are 3 options for that camera, too. |
