Okay, guys, you all know everything.

A friend of mine "inherited" a computer from her granddaughter. However, upon log in, it has a password, that the granddaughter cannot remember. :) In effect, no one can get past the log in screen.

It is Windows Vista, if that helps.

No need to reinstall. You can reset that password without problems. Originally posted here by Slippy (I know what you're thinking, but it works really well. I've used it a few times.)

ophcrack is your friend. Nice and simple GUI, boot from the cd and it does the rest ... just wait a few minutes while it cracks the password for you.

If you want to change the password then the aforementioned ntpasswd program works for that.

Caution - changing the password, imo, should be a last resort as you're writing back to the disk and that may -and I stress may- cause a problem. Cracking the password, logging in, then changing the password is safer.
