Do try these 2 test pattern websites. They are very good and you even have the option to switch off the sRGB profiles with the first one to see the effect of your OS color management.
I found it extremely helpful.

The second of your links is the best I've found for both explaining the nuts & bolts of the calibration process, and for doing the best job possible without a hardware calibration system. Norman knows his stuff.
