i think the scope is too big then... perhaps rephrase the challenge description to:
non-electrical technology invented in the last 10 years |

When I seen your post it reminded me of a old hand crank drill my dad had when I was a child. It maybe in his workshop somewhere, I will have to look.
Would this be a good example of what your suggesting in this challenge?

How about just "Human Powered" which would sort of narrow the field.
We built this gadget for a human powered pumpkin launching world championship. It's not actually technology though, it's chunknology and bubbaneering.
