THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!
If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!!
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears
with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were.
When they were growing up; what with walking five miles
to school every morning
Uphill... Barefoot...
BOTH ways
Yaddee, yadee, yar
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it
and how easy they've got it!
But now that I'm over the ripe old age of thirty-something, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.
You've got it so easy ! I mean, compared to my
childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!
And I hate to say it but you kids today you
don't know how good you've got it!
20
I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet.
If we wanted to know something....
We had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves,
in the card catalogue!!
There was no email!!
We had to actually write somebody a letter,
with a pen!
Then you had to walk all the way across the street and
put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!
Stamps were 10 cents!
Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us.
As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also
had permission to kick our ass!
No where was safe!
There were no MP3' s or Napsters!
You wanted to steal music,
you had to hitchhike to the damn record store
and shoplift it yourself!
Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio
and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and
@#*% it all up!
There were no CD players!
We had tape decks in our car.
We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished
and the tape would come undone.
We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting!
If you were on the phone and somebody else called
they got a busy signal, that's it!
And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either!
When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was!
It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your Bookie,
your drug dealer, a collections agent,
you just didn't know!!!!
You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video
games with high-resolution 3-D graphics!
We had the Atari 2600!
With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'asteroids'.
Your guy was a little square!
You actually had to use your imagination!!
And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever!
And you could never win.
The game just kept getting harder and harder and
faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was
on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off
your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel!
There was no Cartoon Network either!
You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning.
Do you hear what I'm saying!?!
We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons,
you spoiled little rat-bastards!
And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat
somethi ng up we had to use the stove ... Imagine that!
That's exactly what I'm talking about!
You kids today have got it too easy.
You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted
five minutes back in 1980 or before!
Regards,
The over 30 Crowd

What if we're 30 or younger and found it hilarious? I'm 20 and I'm LOL. Bet you didn't have laugh out loud in the earlier days, or laughing out loud to put the grammar straight. Thanks for sharing! |

That's right, no LOL, no BFF, no ;-) Nada.
All we had was XOXOXO
Three networks, plus PBS that us kids all hated because it was "educational". They had no Antiques Road Show in those days. No History Detective. Just some creepy guy painting "Happy little clouds and happy little trees."
No 24 hour a day cartoons. An hour or two in the Morning, and then you had to wait until Saturday.

Yeah, but they had the online auctions instead of pledge breaks, and the nature shows you now see on National Geographic and Discovery ... besides, my mom's improvisational theater group performed on our local PBS station :-) |

I do miss the auctions. I actually worked the phones on one about 20 years ago. Loads of fun!

lol Ambaker. I sure miss Bob Ross. He was a classic. I agree with the entire OP except. Microwaves were available from about the time I was 5 years old. which was a whopping 36 years ago. However those microwaves were not capable of cooking anything near as fast as they do now. They did not have power levels so everything was nuked at high power. No defrosting or popcorn settings etc. |

Yuk-Yuk!
However, I must add that I thought the Atari 2600 sucked when it was cutting edge. |

How true this is, I'm cracking up! BUT...we didn't even have Atari...we got PONG! That was about as primitive as it could get! :P
But we loved being outside and actually "doing" things instead of wanting something else to entertain us. Ah, what a refreshing little ditty!! LOVE IT! |

I checked my future mailbox and saw this forwarded into my Inbox:
You kids have it easy nowadays, do you know, back in my days, we had to:
- take a shower? all you had to do was walk into the EZclean machine, press a friggin button and had all contaminants removed by nano-technology!
- wash our clothes in a washing machine! and all you need to do was hang it up and wait for the bacteria to eat away the dirt, and yet you still complaint about it!
- iron/press out clothes. Yup, they havent invented the new godzilla-fiber which you wear today, totally wrinkle free, maintenance free.
- walk around our house to get to the kitchen, room, bathroom? now you have your CarryMe to ferry you around the house! lazy basturds!
- go to a real school? you dont leave the comfort of your room/house and simply logon to your e-school, at your own allocated time.
- when we had to talk to someone far away, we need to call them using something called a mobilephone? you had to charge it, yes, it uses these things called batteries to power it - you kids are lucky, you can simply talk to your friends using that implanted cellular chip in your tooth.
- our video games were only 3D and had virtual surround sound. we didnt have virtual-reality games like you do. our games didnt incorporate virtual scent and touch! we had to punch buttons on a blardy gamepad or joystick!
- we can only watch our favourite movies on screen/cinema? and they are 2-dimensional! well, you cant even find a TV nowadays - nobody makes movies anymore! you get your entertainments in a virtual reality dome and you get to watch the scene from any angle you so wish, but yet you kids are not satisfied and always complained that life sucks!

It was in the US. My Mother the Car has a reputation as one of the worst TV shows ever.

Wikied it and that's what they say...sounds like it was terrible, but I was only 3 at the time, so I never did see the one and only season. |

yep. not only *could* you walk up hill both ways, but you *had* to as well. :) My first three years of college, it snowed every "reading day" (the day before exams when classes were canceled and we were supposed to study) -- both in December and MAY.
So, we had to walk uphill both ways in the snow.
(The joke at Appalachian State is that you could always tell the freshmen because they took their winter clothes home at Spring Break). |

Actually, I had always thought it was a late 50's show, as I had never seen it either, but I was only 4 so I was still busy watching cartoons. |

Yes, and when I was learning photography there was no "through the lens metering", you had to use a hand-held or guess... Color FILM was expensive to buy and develop, so most pictures were black and white.
I still remember when we got our first color TV. We watched "Bonanza" and "Lassie" and Disney until our eyes nearly fell out because they were in color and one of our two stations carried them.
Computers took up a whole room and if you were lucky enough to have the clearances to run data, you had to shove millions of trays of "punch cards" through the machine (and woe be to anyone who dropped a tray of those cards and got those binary numbers out of sequence :))
McDonalds was still working on its first 100 million hamburgers.
and we all stopped and watched those fuzzy black and white moving images of Neil Armstrong walking on the moon and were fascinated and awestruck and thought it was absolutely wonderful!

And when the snow on the tv channel got too bad, someone would go stand by the tv and grab one of the antenna on the rabbit ears. If that didn't work, you got out the tin foil. |

Sadly, the youth of today miss out on some very cool stuff too, however.
With seat belt laws... When I was a kid I'd be all over the place in the car during road trips. Hanging out the windows, laying up under the rear window, laying across the top of the front bench seat, the floor. My dad even let me sit on his lap and steer while we were on the highway going 65mph, for real, even though my Mom freaked out the entire time.
Good times the youth of today will never have growing up. :-(
