Looks like Nikon have put out a recall on the D5000. Not sure how many are affected, found the info here:

Nikon D5000 won't turn on? It's not you, it's broken

ETA: Actually doesn't look like a recall, it's more like a "if yours breaks we'll fix it free" thing.
