I need to buy a new monitor as my 6 year old 19" CRT is starting to die. I am looking at the Samsung 2333SW 23" monitor. Does anyone have any experience with this monitor? I mainly use the computer for watching movies/series and editing photos/viewing photos. How does the monitor do in this regard? Good performance for playing games would be nice, but having an ageing AGP-based 3D card means I hardly ever play games any more, so this is not important.
Another alternative is the Samsung 2494HS 23.6" monitor but it costs R2222 (~ $275) while the 2333SW is 1880 (~ $232). Is the 2494HS worth paying almost 20% more?
Both monitors do 1920x1080, 5ms, 1,000:1 native contrast ratio (the 2494 does 50,000:1 dynamic contrast and the 2333SW 20,000:1) and 300cd/m^2 brightness. The 2494HS has a matte finish and built-in speakers, which I probably won't use. |

I just bought the Samsung 2343BWX and am quite happy with it so far. It was $209 CDN. I read a fair number of reviews prior to buying.

The dynamic contrast ratio is like the digital zoom on a camera. The typical contrast ratio and refresh speed is what's important. 1000:1 and 5ms is pretty much the norm at the moment.

Matte is good, I would advise not to buy a monitor with a glossy screen ("BrightView" and such) since the reflections can be really annoying. I don't want to watch myself when i'm at the computer ;)

Unfortunately the place I'm buying the monitor from can only get the two monitors I mentioned in stock at the moment.

That's probably the biggest thing going for the 2494HS. The problem is that I cannot find much written about it online and I know many people who have the 2333SW (and older 22" version) and are happy with it, so I know it's a good monitor. |
